Honoring tradition, shaping the future: WSU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
OGDEN, Utah — Weber State University’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month has begun, featuring a packed agenda through mid-October.
This year’s theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” Events will showcase Latino and Hispanic culture, contributions, and heritage.
“This is the time when we bond together as a community, honor our traditions, and share it with all those who want to know more about the Hispanic and Latino cultures and its contributions to America,” said Mónica Rodriguez Mesa, student engagement program manager.
On Sept. 23, WSU’s Student Success Center will host a workshop on making hand soaps, face masks, and sachet bags, noon to 2 p.m. in Shepherd Union Room 312. On Sept. 24, attendees can enjoy Latin dancing, 6–7:30 p.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballroom C.
Throughout October, Mexican artist Vicente Martínez Romo will have 12 pieces of colorful artwork on display in the Shepherd Union Skybridge, lining the hall with art inspired by ancient literature from Mexico.
Activities will continue through Oct. 15, concluding with a mariachi performance from Mariachi Zavala, a family ensemble representing three generations of musicians. A full schedule of events is available on the Hispanic Heritage Month website.
“It’s an opportunity for people to see and learn about Hispanic heritage and the various cultures within the Spanish-speaking world,” said Salvador Ceja-Monroy, academic advisor and Hispanic Heritage Month events committee member.
Events are free and open to all.
Anayeli Rodriguez, president of the student-led Hispanic Area Council club, lived out of state before moving to Ogden. Connecting with people who shared her interests and culture turned the transition into a positive experience.
“We’re excited to have campus celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with us,” Rodriguez said. “Everyone’s invited to come participate.”
