‘A Time To Embrace Our Roots’: WSU to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

OGDEN, Utah — Weber State University will kick off its annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations Sept. 10, where all are invited to participate in a month packed with events that highlight the significance of Hispanic and Latino communities.

“It’s a month where we can embrace our culture and roots,” said WSU student Zulleidy Torres. “We get to share with other people who we are and what we stand for.”

This year’s celebrations will start with a Hispanic Heritage Month Kick Off where everyone is welcome to wear their traditional attire and enjoy refreshments.

Other activities for the month include a sugar skull workshop, a farmer’s market featuring items from eight countries in Central and South America, and a cumbia night where attendees can enjoy traditional Colombian music and dance.

“One of the responsibilities we have is to develop a sense of belonging,” said Mónica Rodriguez, student engagement program manager. “Now more than ever, it’s important for students to feel supported, embraced, and appreciated in terms of the contributions they bring to the community.”

The month will conclude with a poetry night and keynote speech from Don Salazar, founder of Creative Times, Inc. and chairman of the board for the Hispanic Business Council. A full list of events and activities can be found on the Student Success Center website.

Anayeli Rodriguez, president of the Hispanic Area Council, also emphasized the importance of Hispanic and Latino representation after growing up in a rural town with a small Hispanic population.

“I hope by sharing our culture and traditions, people will realize we’re not that different from each other, that we’re more similar than we might think,” Rodriguez said.
