Weber—The Contemporary West is moving from a print journal to online only, and we are looking for excellent writing to include in our first issue of the new journal. We invite submissions in the genres of short stories, creative non-fiction, poetry, and art.
We welcome writers whose works offer insight into the environment and culture of the contemporary western United States and across the world. Essentially, we are looking for good writing that engages human nature and the environment.
Read the following submission guidelines carefully.
We do not accept multiple submissions, but we will consider simultaneous submissions. Please let us know as soon as possible if your work has been accepted for publication elsewhere.
We do not accept previously published works (by this, we mean any story, essay, poem, or art/photography that has appeared on the web or in print, or on your personal blog). However, we will consider translated works if the original languages weren’t in English.
We do not accept AI-generated work.
All submissions must be emailed to submissions@weber.edu.
The subject line of your email must state your genre and your name (for example, Short Story: Peter Snider).
Due to the volume of the submissions we receive, we will respond within six months, though this can be longer.
All submissions should be accompanied by a third-person biography.
You can submit up to four pages or poems, or one long poem of the same page count. Please submit these as a single Microsoft Word document
Short stories can be up to 6,000 words. Your manuscript should be double-spaced, and the font preferably Times New Roman, size 12, and saved as a Microsoft Word document.
Creative nonfiction can be up to 4,000 words. Your manuscript should be double-spaced, and the font preferably Times New Roman, size 12, and saved as a Microsoft Word document.
Art and photography can be up to five images, and saved in JPEG or PNG format. Please include a short note articulating the ideas or concepts behind the work.
