Medieval Europe

Program Details

Of Gods and Men is an interdisciplinary course that integrates the philosophy, history, and art history of Medieval Europe (c.500-1400 C.E.). Certain Medieval philosophical perspectives will be explored in their historical and cultural contexts. The architectural and artistic reflection of those cultural and philosophical ideals will be emphasized on site. The complex relationship between Medieval Christianity and its social context will also be explored. Critical engagement with primary sources will be a major element of the course. Students will come away with an understanding of how modern Western culture, and their own lives, are rooted in the Middle Ages.

Requirements:

  • The destinations include remote sites sometimes in mountainous and rocky locations that require steep climbs and/or long treks.

Cost: $4,100 (Airfare IS Included)

Deposit: $500 dollars will need to be paid when you hand in your application.

Note that you will be charged credit card assessment fees if you use a card in person, over the phone, or online. You will not be charged these fees if paying by cash, check, or ACH bank transfer online.

Includes: room and board, local transportation abroad, excursions, and some meals.

Not included: passport, incidentals, excess baggage costs, any unscheduled travel, and most meals.

Itinerary

The program will span two full weeks visiting different cities in France, England and Scotland, including travel days. Attendance at every two-hour pre-departure class is mandatory as well as every group event while abroad. Please contact Dr. Katie Nelson or Marc Nelson for details on the Itinerary.

May 11: Depart SLC for Paris

May 12: Arrive Paris, Travel to Chartres, visit the cathedral and town. Continue to Mont Saint Michel. Sleep in Mont Saint Michel.

May 13: Visit Mont Saint Michel Abbey and grounds. Travel to Bayeux, visit the Bayeux Tapestry. Sleep in Bayeux.

May 14: Free Time (visit D-day beaches if desired). Ferry to Portsmouth, UK. Sleep on the Ferry.

May 15: Arrive in Portsmouth. Travel to Salisbury, visit cathedral, including 1215 Magna Carta. Continue to Old Sarum and Stonehenge. Continue to Oxford.

May 16: Explore Oxford with Professor Bernard Capp, including Oxford colleges, Roger Bacon sites, and Bodleian Library Treasures.

May 17: Ashmolean Museum; free afternoon in Oxford.

May 18: Travel to York. Walk around medieval wall, visit Saint Mary's Abbey, York Minster Cathedral, medieval town center and Clifford's Tower. Sleep in York

May 19: Visit Yorvik Viking Center. Sleep in York.

May 20: Day trip to Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey. Sleep in York.

May 21: Travel to Holy Island, visit Lindisfarne Priory and castle. Continue to Edinburgh, walking tour including St. Giles' Cathedral. Sleep in Edinburgh.

May 22: Edinburgh Castle. National Museum of Scotland. Sleep in Edinburgh.

May 23: Day trip to Bannockburn and Stirling Castle. Sleep in Edinburgh.

May 24: Fly from Edinburgh to SLC.
 

Academic Courses

Students may enroll in up to six (6) of the following credit hours:

  • HONORS 4920 (3)
  • PHILOSOPHY 2920 (3)
  • HONORS HU2010 (3)

Program Directors

Dr. Katie Nelson, program director: Adjunct Professor in the History Dept and Honors Program. She will advise half the students while abroad, as well as teach the history (Honors) component of the course. Delivers most lectures while abroad.

Marc Nelson, co-director: Adjunct Instructor in the Philosophy and Honors Programs. He will advise half the students abroad and teach the philosophy component of the course. Manages most logistical matters while abroad.

Both directors have been to Europe several times and are certified in CPR and First Aid.

Trip Cancellations

1. If Weber State cancels a trip for any reason, all participants will be refunded 100% of funds paid to the school. If a participant withdraws from the program for any reason, they are subject to the refund policy found on the first page of the application.  Deposits are always non-refundable, unless the program is canceled by Weber State.  No refunds will be issued 30 days prior to program start date. 

2. Refunds will NOT be given to students due to COVID-19 concerns. Before programs were canceled last year, every student was given the option to withdraw from programs without penalty due to COVID-19. This year students are applying, cognizant of the pandemic. Weber State will not intentionally place students into high risk situations. We will work together with Program Leaders and Departments on canceling should the destination demonstrate increased risks, be they from COVID or any other concern. As such, students must abide by the standard refund policy.
