Iceland

Program Details

Through site visitations throughout Iceland and discussions, students will be learning about plate tectonics, divergent plate boundaries, volcanic activity in Iceland, volcanic forms, geothermal activity, hydrothermal processes, glacier processes and forms.

Day 1: Flight SLC to Keflavik Airport
Day 2: Keflavik – Biskupstungnabraut (Reykjanes Penninsula)
Day 3: Biskupstungnabraut – Thingvellir (Thingvelr National Park) Selfoss and Geysir
Day 4: Biskupstungnabraut – Skaftafell (Gacier Tour)
Day 5: Holuhraun Volcanic Eruption, Ice Lagoon, Skeithararsandur Floodplain
Day 6: Biskupstungnabraut – Landmanalaugar
Day 7: Biskupstungnabraut – Eldgja (Laki) and Burfell (Hekla)
Day 8: Biskupstungnabraut – Porsmork (Eyjafjatlajokull)
Day 9: Biskupstungnabraut – Vestmannaeyjabaer, Boat Tour
Day 10: Biskupstungnabraut – Reykjanes or Magma Chamber
Day 11: Biskupstungnabraut – Keflavik, depart to SLC

Academic Courses

Pre-Req required:

  • GEO 1110 Dynamic Earth - Physical Geology
  • or GEO 1060 Environmental Geoscience

Including the pre-req, students may take:

  • GEO 4950 - Adv. Geoscience Fieldtrips (3 credits)
  • GEO 2950 - Geoscience Fieldtrips (3 credits)

Program Directors

Marek Matyjasik will be the Program Director and trip leader. He will be responsible for logistical preparation, group supervision, and academic content of the trip.

Trip Cancellations

If the trip is canceled, all participants will be refunded. Any refunds for withdrawals from the program will be determined by the Study Abroad Director according to the recoverability of incurred costs and fees and according to the Continuing Education Policy. Once the group leaves all costs are non-refundable in their entirety. Dates & process may change. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of any such changes by staying in contact with the program director.
