WSU/USU Cold Start & Idle Emissions Research
The National Center for Automotive Science & Technology at Weber State University (NCAST) and Utah State University have been working together to collect, analyze, and publish research on “Cold Start” emissions versus idling emissions.
We are looking to answer whether cold start emissions are higher in a colder environment as well as how long a catalytic converter is able to remain at an optimal temperature during winter conditions. We will evaluate how long a vehicle must be idling before the emission output is greater than that of a “Cold Start.”
Utah Centralized I/M Database
NCAST is in the process of developing a Utah Centralized Emission Database for the I/M Counties in the State of Utah.
This project will create a uniform database accessible to all the I/M Counties in the state (Utah, Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Cache), the Utah Division of Air quality (DAQ) and the Utah Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Vehicle data from the five I/M Programs and the DMV will be shared. This common database will improve the efficiency of all the programs thereby providing improved air quality in all areas of the State.
New York OBD I/M Technical Support
NCAST has partnered with the New York Vehicle Inspection Program (NYVIP2) providing On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system technical support services to vehicle inspection technicians in New York State.
NCAST uses its resources including industry service information and its relationship with OEM partners to supply advice to New York technicians investigating hard-to-solve OBD inspection issues.
While supporting the New York inspection program with technical expertise, NCAST staff and students have the opportunity to research real-world issues encountered in the vehicle inspection field.
