Technologist in Blood Banking Post-Bacc Certificate - Online

Upon successful completion of this program, students who hold a bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, or chemistry will qualify to take the Technologist in Blood Banking (BB) ASCP categorical certification examination via Route 3. 

This two-semester, 12 credit hour program offers an affordable, efficient pathway for those seeking to advance their career in blood banking and transfusion services. Courses begin every semester, allowing students to start at a time that works best for them. Our curriculum is structured to help bring new, well-trained professionals into blood banking and transfusion services. The average starting salary for a Technologist in Blood Banking is around $76,000. 

This program is only available to students in the United States. California and New York residents are not eligible.

TECHNOLOGIST IN BLOOD BANKING POST-BACC CERTIFICATE COURSEWORK

This program will focus on fundamental and ethical skills, including:

  • Patient safety
  • Performance of waived, moderate, and high complexity laboratory procedures to include pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing 
  • Correlation of theory with laboratory work
  • Correlation of laboratory findings to common disease
  • Laboratory management and interprofessional education

ONLINE TECHNOLOGIST IN BLOOD BANKING COURSE LAYOUT

MLS 5301: Fundamentals of Immunohematology

Credit hours: 3

This course provides foundational instruction for individuals pursuing the blood bank categorical program. The course covers fundamental concepts in immunology, hematology, hemostasis, and clinical chemistry as related to immunohematology and transfusion medicine, and this course prepares students for advanced immunohematology.


MLS 5302: Advanced Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine

Credit hours: 3

This course provides advanced instruction for individuals pursuing the blood bank technologist categorical program. The course covers advanced immunohematology theory and specialized procedures as they pertain to blood banking, quality assurance, and regulatory issues in transfusion medicine.


MLS 5203: Applied Laboratory Mathematics and Operations

Credit hours: 3 

This course covers advanced concepts in the clinical laboratory. Material covered will include basic statistical concepts and procedures, experimental design and basic research concepts, analyzer selections and method validation, and various laboratory management theories and techniques. This course will focus on performing a variety of statistical techniques used in method verification/validation studies. The main software package used in this course is Microsoft Excel.


MLS 5304: Clinical Rotation in Immunohematology

Credit hours: 3

This is the final course of the Blood Banking Technologist categorical program. Students will perform a clinical rotation within a clinical immunohematology laboratory with a minimum duration of 160 hours. In addition to completing a clinical competency checklist under the supervision of qualified preceptors, students will complete a practice blood bank (BB) board of certification (BOC) exam at the conclusion of this course.

ADMISSION FOR THE ONLINE TECHNOLOGIST IN BLOOD BANKING POST-BACC CERTIFICATE

Academic Requirements:

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Meet one of the following criteria:
    • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry
    • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry; may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree

Clinical Requirements:

Clinical support in the Blood Bank. We do not assist with clinical placement. 

STEP 2: Apply

Enroll at Weber State University

Weber State University is an open-enrollment university; you can apply any time. If you've taken a WSU course in the past (including concurrently), visit Taking a Break at Weber for more information.

During this process, select “Non-Degree Seeking” as your major, then select “Technologist in Blood Banking” as your major under the Dumke College of Health Professions Post Baccalaureate Certificate.

The general admission fee is $30. You will need to submit your official undergraduate degree transcripts to the Admissions Office. 

A secondary program application is required. Note the admission requirements before you begin: 

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Statement of Support for clinicals is required to be uploaded to application
  • A one-time, non-refundable $125 application fee is required
  • Application deadlines: Fall: May 1, Spring: October 1, Summer: February 1

STEP 3: Verification

Once you apply, our program coordinators will review your official transcripts and application to make sure you qualify under Route 3 for Technologist in Blood Banking. 

STEP 4: Register

After verification, advisement and laboratory requirements are met, students will receive an email with instructions on how to register for your Medical Laboratory Sciences courses.
