Social Science Composite Teaching Major

BACHELOR'S DEGREE (BA)


» Program Prerequisite:
Not required for History Teaching major, but must satisfy Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Teacher Education Department).
 
» Minor: Not required. TRACK selection will serve in lieu of a minor.
 
» Grade Requirements: A grade of "C" or better in courses applied toward this major (a grade of "C-" is not acceptable). Also refer to the general grade requirements for graduation under General Requirements.  History Teaching majors must achieve an overall GPA of 3.00 for the last 30 semester hours with a GPA of 3.25 for admission to the Teacher Education program.  Geography and Political Science Teaching majors must meet with that department advisor and fulfill those specific teaching requirements.
 

» Credit Hour Requirements: A total of 120 credit hours is required for graduation - a minimum of 66 of these is required within the Social Science Composite Teaching Major. A total of 40 upper-division credit hours is required (courses numbered 3000 and above).   Exceptions must be approved in advance by the Composite Coordinator.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT, DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY BA DEGREE

 The Bachelor of Arts degree includes a language requirement.  The Department of History BA Language Course requirements are:

 LANGUAGE COURSES REQUIRED TO FULFILL THE BA (12 credit hours)

 6 credit hours of foreign language

 AND the following language arts courses

 HIST  3000     Investigating History (3)

Advisement

After declaring the Composite major, a student should meet with the Composite Coordinator to establish the track to be taken as part of the program. In addition, Social Science Composite majors are required to meet with their faculty advisor at least annually for course and program advisement. They must also meet with their advisor before registration for HIST 4990. Call 801-626-6706 for additional information or to schedule an appointment. Admission Requirements

Declare your program of study. Social Science Composite Teaching majors must satisfy Teacher Education admission and licensure requirements (see Teacher Education Department in this catalog). Refer to the specific Teaching major department for their teaching requirements. 

General Education

Refer to General Requirements for either Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts requirements. General education courses taken as part of the major and discipline requirements below will count toward both the Social Science Composite major (grade C or better) and general education requirements: HIST SS/DV 1510, HIST 2700 and HIST 2710 (must take both to fulfill American Institutions requirement).

Courses completed at other collegiate institutions may be used to fulfill program requirements only after approval by the Composite Coordinator. At least one course in each area listed below (including the major) must be taken at Weber State.

Course Requirement for BA

Required Major Courses (36 - 46 credit hours)

Complete a Teaching major in one of the following three areas
  • History (minimum of 36 credit hours) Refer to the History Dept. for their Teaching major requirements and use the History TRACK for required courses.
  • Geography (minimum of 36 credit hours) Refer to the Geography Dept. for their Teaching major requirements and use the Geography TRACK for required courses.
  • Political Science (minimum of 39 credit hours) Refer to the Political Science Dept. for their Teaching major requirements and use the Political Science TRACK for required courses.
In addition to the Teaching major requirements, students will also fulfill the requirements of the track that corresponds with their major.
HIST 4500 is required for completion of the Secondary Education Licensure program.
 

History Teaching Major Track (30 credit hours)

Fulfill all the requirements for a History Teaching Major and also take the following:
 
Geography
  • GEOG PS/SI 1000 Natural Environments of the Earth (3)

and ONE of the following:

  • GEOG SS/DV 1300 Places and Peoples of the World (3)
  • GEOG SS/DV 1520 Geography of the United States and Canada (3)

and ONE of the following:

  • GEOG 3060 World Environmental Issues (3)
  • GEOG 3450 Cartography (3)
  • GEOG 3500 Geography of Utah (3)

Political Science

  • POLS AI 1100 American National Government (3)

and ONE of the following:

  • POLS 3140 Foreign Policy of the U.S. (3)
  • POLS 3330 American Political Thought (3)
  • POLS 4020 Constitutional Law I (3)
  • POLS 4030 Constitutional Law II (3)

and ONE of the following:

  • POLS 3600 Political Parties (3)
  • POLS 3610 Campaigns and Elections (3)
  • POLS 4640 American Presidency (3)

Psychology

  • PSY 1010 SS Introductory Psychology (3)

and TWO of the following:

  • PSY 2730 Biopsychology (3)
  • PSY 3010 Abnormal Psychology (3)
  • PSY 3430 Theories of Personality (3)
  • PSY 3460 Social Psychology (3)

And ONE of the following:

  • ANTH DV 3600 Culture Area Studies (Native Americans) (3)
  • ECON SS 1010 Economics as a Social Science (3)
  • SOC SS/DV 1020 Social Problems (3)
