Other Academic Activities

  •  Completed a 4-day Design Build Institute of America Educator’s workshop August 2017 to qualify to be able to teach students all but the legal portion of the approved Design-Build curriculum that would make them eligible to sit for the DBIA exam to become certified. 
  • Completed the 11-week Higher Education Academy course at Weber State University and obtained the accompanying certificate in November 2016 
  • Worked with a group of Information Technology students and the University faculty support office to create an online survey vehicle for research that will complement previous and ongoing research performed by Dr.’s Hutchings and Christofferson and also to aid in future research projects. 
  • Served as chairperson and BYU representative for the American Institute of Constructors exam administration.  Also served as a committee member for the on-campus groups of the Associated General Contractors, the American Society of Professional Estimators, and the construction honor society Sigma Lambda Chi. Also served as an assistant advisor to the Construction Management Student Association.

Tenant Finish Addition of Exam rooms for Revere Health Eagle Mountain Urgent Care Family Medicine Offices—Eagle Mountain, Utah;  Addition to the existing clinic of several additional exam rooms and a break room.  I left the company at about the time floor coverings were to be installed.  
 
2016                
Remodel & Addition of Revere Health Building A Pharmacy & Offices—Provo, Utah;  A  
remodel/addition project requiring that the existing pharmacy not be shut down, and a drive up call station for patients to be provided which required creative thought and scheduling during demolition and for the move to the newly added space that was built during phase 1 of the work.   I was involved in all of the preconstruction and awarding of contracts and began the project through a few months prior to leaving. 
 
2016                
Partial Remodel & Addition of Revere Health Building B Administrative Offices—Provo, 
Utah;  A 3-phase remodel and upgrade to the administrative offices and main corridor leading to an ambulatory surgical center housed in the same building requiring careful coordination and night work to never impact patient under anesthesia.   Added new I.T. offices, a training room, expanded boardroom, lobby, breakroom, restrooms and refurbishing of offices. 
 
2016                
SCIP (South County Investment Properties) Skilled Nursing Facility for Revere Health, Salem Utah Campus, Salem, Utah;  A 14-Bed Skilled Nursing Facility.  I was involved in preconstruction services as this facility was originally to be built simultaneously with the Health Care Center as they are connected by two walkways, but the owner wasn’t able to get it started until after I left.  
 
2015-2016            
SCIP (South County Investment Properties) Health Care Center for Revere Health— Salem, Utah;  A two-story 77,387 S.F. medical office building to house doctors’ offices for family medicine and various specialties, physical therapy including a therapy pool.  Also includes a dialysis center, an ambulatory surgical center and MRI, CT scan, x-ray and fluoroscopy capabilities.  
 
2015-2016            
Innomark—St. George, Utah;  Production and storage warehouse space of 43,000 S.F. as an addition to the existing facility with steel buildings on an upgraded and expanded site.  Potential future three-story office space pending available financing.

McDonald’s Major Remodel Project—St. George, Utah; Complete replacement and remodel 
of all exterior and all interior components of an existing 24-hr. per day McDonald’s store in a 5week period including a pilot of first-of-its-kind customized ordering capabilities.

The Manti High School Kitchen and Cafeteria Remodel—Manti, Utah;  Addition of new space for a Cafeteria and remodeled/expanded space for a new kitchen.  Conversion of former cafeteria to a lecture hall with telescopic theater-style seating.  Relocated transformer and utilities.  Total cost approximately 2.4 million.  My role was to assist in pre-construction and prepare all front-end documents, estimator, project manager and project engineer.  Ran concurrently with the completion of the Delta High School project.  
 
2012-2014            
The New Delta High School & Delta High School Auxiliary Gymnasium—Delta, Utah & The Millard High School Auxiliary Gymnasium—Fillmore, Utah;  A new 111,166 S.F. high school, a 24,586 S.F. Auxiliary Gymnasium in Delta, Utah followed by a complete demolition of the old high school and gym for new parking and a 33,100 S.F. Auxiliary Gymnasium for 
Millard high school also followed by the complete demolition of the old gymnasium for parking.  All three buildings ran concurrently (3 Separate Superintendents & 2 separate architects) at a total cost of approximately $31,400,000.  My role was as project manager and project engineer.   
 
2011-2012            
University Neuropsychiatric Institute HVAC Upgrade—University of Utah; Salt Lake City, UT:  Mechanical, Lighting and other misc. upgrades to the old facility of approximately 100,000 S.F. of space.  My role was as project manager and some project engineering. 
 
2011                
University Neuropsychiatric Institute Expansion—University of Utah;  Salt Lake City, UT:  
A $32,000,000 four-story expansion of 120,000 S.F., which included an additional 72 Patient Rooms in 5 Patient Care Units, an MRI for research, and a new full-service kitchen with dining facilities. My role was as project manager and some project engineering in the final 8 months taking over from the original project manager.  
 
2010                
St. Rose Dominican Hospital Siena Campus Emergency Department/Operating Room 
Expansion; Henderson, NV:  In a fully functioning hospital expanded the emergency department by adding a “Rapid Assessment” area without disruption to emergency services including access to and from the helipad.  Added two new operating rooms over the top of the existing loading docks/receiving without disruption to receiving or the existing operating rooms during tie-ins.   Remodeled the emergency department main entrance, pediatrics, and admitting and waiting areas by adding ballistic protection to doors, windows, walls, and casework and new medical gases, nurse call, and fire alarm.  Also remodeled the post anesthesia care unit by adding stations. My role was as project manager and project engineer.      
 
2008-2009            
St. George 5th District Courthouse; St. George, UT:   A three-story, 93,000 square foot structure featuring eight courtrooms, administrative support offices, probation offices, and public spaces.  The eight courtrooms are supported with judge’s chambers, jury rooms, witness rooms, attorney/client conference rooms, deliberation rooms, shared judicial support rooms and a library.  Total cost - $25.1 million.  My role was as project manager and project engineer.  
 
2007-2008            
Russell C. Taylor Health Sciences Center & Road Package—Dixie State College;  St 
George, UT:  A three-story, 76,000 square foot facility housing the nursing program and dental hygiene—including 24 fully functional dental stations with nitrous oxide and X-ray capabilities.  The facility also includes respiratory therapy and surgical technology, which includes a mock operatory, emergency medical services, and medical radiology with two fully operational X-ray beds.  In addition, a new access road was installed to tie in on the south side of Dixie Regional Medical Center, past the Health Science Center and connect between Lowe’s Hardware and the north side of DRMC.  Total Value - $15.3M ($14.1 for the Bldng & $1.2 for the Road).  My role was as project manager and project engineer.

Provo Canyon School Girls Facility;  Orem, UT:  A 16,500 S.F. addition to the existing youth crisis facility.  My role was as estimator, scheduler and project manager.

Spyglas Court Condominiums;  Provo, UT;  An 18-unit condominium project with special 
engineering for the building to sit directly over the middle of the span of precast double-tees (without bearing on the foundation walls) used to create underground parking.  My role was as estimator, scheduler, and project manager.

Davencourt at Pilgrim’s Landing;  Lehi, UT:  A 145-Unit condominium project.  My role was as estimator, scheduler and project manager.

Suncrest Welcome Center Sales Office; Draper, UT:  A high-end sales office for the Suncrest 
development on top of the point of the mountain overlooking the Utah and Salt Lake Valleys.  The project included a park area with a large water feature.  My role was as estimator, scheduler, and project manager.

Brookside Professional Plaza;  Springville, UT;  Twenty-five thousand square feet of professional space including a physical therapist with X-ray facilities and a therapy pool,  a dentist, an orthodontist, and an optometrist.   My role was as estimator, scheduler and project manager.

Courtyard at Jamestown;  Provo, UT:  Approximately 90,000 S.F. of high-end professional office space with common areas and tenant improvement spaces.  We built buildings 1, 2, 4, 5 & 7 and did spaces for law offices, dentists, a surgical center, plastic surgery, an architect and two mortgage companies.   My role was estimator, scheduler and project manager.

Project Manager 

Performed project management on many commercial and residential projects ranging from approximately $100,000 to $32,000,000.  Responsibilities included the following: 

  • Negotiated and administered contracts to owners and subcontractors 
  • Coordinated weekly safety meetings for employees and subcontractors 
  • Conducted progress meetings with owners, architects, and subcontractors 
  • Created, monitored, and updated critical path schedules                 
  • Established and/or controlled project budgets 
  • Generated exposure logs for risk analysis 
  • Created cost coding, monitored cost control, and reviewed progress reports 
  • Monitored sub contractor base and approved new contractors when appropriate and needed 
  • Submitted and reviewed pay requests 
  • Reviewed processed and tracked all submittals, RFI’s & Change Orders 
  • Reviewed daily logs and conducted weekly progress meetings with employees      

Estimator
Served as principal estimator for six and one half years.  Abilities go beyond quantity takeoffs and ability to read documents.  Success due to personality and ability to communicate with people to put them at ease and gain their trust.  Successfully trained four different estimators who had no previous experience–two of which later occupied positions with reputable builders in Salt Lake City.   

Other estimating responsibilities included the following: 
 

  • Coordinated and oversaw the bid process and all bid-day activities  
  • Met with prospective clients to review plans and determine their needs 
  • Attended pre-bid meetings and communicated with architects during the bid process

McCarthy Construction-Mark Diversified, Sacramento, California:  Worked as job foreman and later promoted to superintendent of the Combat-Support Center—a 25,000 square foot facility at Nellis AFB.  Supervised a 108-unit-housing project costing for unaccompanied enlisted personnel  at Nellis AFB.  Supervised the base entomology building.  Also worked as the quality-control supervisor for the base-engineering complex.  Supervised crews of 5-50 workers.

Service Activity

From 2019 to the present have been the student advisor and program coordinator for the Parson 

Activity
Construction Management program.  Member of the college diversity committee, advising committee, and curriculum committee for the college of Engineering Applied Science and Technology.  Current Advisor for RHO IV, the Weber State University Chapter of the Construction 
Management Advisor and team coach for student competition teams for the CM Challenge and ASC 
Student competitions.  Served as chairperson and BYU representative for the American Institute of Constructors and proctor for the Certified Professional Constructor Exam.  Served on various committees for student groups.  Fulfilled two years of voluntary missionary work for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Guadalajara, Mexico, 1978-1980.
