WSU honors Black History Month through culture, community connection
OGDEN, Utah — Throughout February, Weber State University is celebrating Black History Month with a series of events focused on heritage, connection, and support.
This year’s activities began with an art exhibit showcasing how the Black diaspora has shaped culture and tradition, now on display along the indoor bridge between the Shepherd Union Building and the Student Services Center.
Other upcoming events will cover a different theme each week, with activities ranging from speakers and panel discussions to the crowd-favorite free haircuts offered by a local Black-owned barbershop.
“Community is essential right now,” said Maryan Shale, student engagement program manager in the Student Success Center. “These events invite us to show up for one another. Our campus deserves to feel surrounded by love and openness, and this programming creates intentional spaces where campus and community can come together to learn, strengthen connections, and deepen understanding.”
Events are free and open to all. The weekly themes include:
- Feb. 9–11: Preserving Black “Hairitage” for Future Generations. Learn about history, tradition, and self-expression surrounding hair during a panel, then get a free haircut or braiding service.
- Feb. 17–18: Health, Healing, and Strength. Psychotherapist Sherra Watkins, founder of a counseling and coaching organization, will offer audiences practical insights for personal growth and collective wellbeing.
- Feb. 23–26: Black Generational Wealth. Hear from keynote speaker Desange Kuenihira, entrepreneur and founder of the nonprofit education organization UnDEfeated. Later in the week, attendees can meet Sidni Shorter, president and CEO of the Utah Black Chamber of Commerce, during a community mixer focused on economic empowerment.
