WSU’s Intermountain Sustainability Summit focuses on ‘Building Resilience’

OGDEN, Utah — The Intermountain Sustainability Summit, a longstanding annual event at Weber State University, will take place March 19–20 in the Shepherd Union Building.

The ISS brings hundreds of sustainability-minded professionals, students, and emerging leaders to Ogden from business, government, nonprofit, and academic sectors across the state.Pink cherry blossoms frame the Weber State Univeristy’s campus pond with a fountain, walking path, and buildings set against snow-dusted mountains on a sunny spring day.

This year’s sessions are centered on the theme “Building Resilience.” Participants will learn about designing adaptable infrastructure, restoring ecosystems, protecting communities from increasing wildfire risks, and new technologies like plug-in solar.

“As we face intertwined planetary, climate, and community challenges, the opportunity to learn from one another and collaborate has never been more important,” said Bonnie Christiansen, ISS organizer. “This is why many sessions will focus on strengthening relationships, as well as infrastructure. Resilience grows from the connections we create and the ideas we share, as much as from what we build.”

This year’s keynote speaker is Kristin Baja, executive director of the Resilience Hub Collaborative. Baja has spent more than a decade building resilience hubs, which are physical sites in neighborhoods designed to meet community needs year-round. She was recognized by the Obama administration as a “Champion of Change” in 2016.

The keynote speech and more than a dozen sessions will be held Thursday, March 19, along with the Eco Expo and student poster contest. Workshops will be held Friday, March 20, focusing on increasing energy efficiency in the industrial sector, building community-based resilience hubs, and completing LEED v5 sustainability framework building assessments.
