High School ROTC Cadets Compete at WSU

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University’s ROTC program will bring junior ROTC cadets to campus for the JROTC Wildcat Challenge Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. at Weber State’s University Village, just south of the Dee Events Center (1321 E 4600 S, Ogden, Utah).

The challenge, which has occurred for the last five years, pits JROTC cadets against one another in various skills competition culminating in a 5K ruck march. A barbecue and awards ceremony will follow the two-hour competition.

“The Wildcat Challenge is a physically and mentally challenging event for our youth,” said Capt. Jeong Hinton, WSU ROTC. “JROTC cadets from all over the state participate in this awesome event. During the event, the WSU ROTC cadre and cadets serve as the mentors and referees.”

The list of events includes knot tying; an obstacle course; a Kim’s Game, which challenges participants’ observation and memorization skills; and a military style throwing event to test contestants’ accuracy.

Ten area high school JROTC squads are expected to attend, most including Ogden High, Taylorsville High, Northridge High and the Utah Military Academy.

Weber State’s ROTC program is the next step for students considering a career in the military. The ROTC program incorporates leadership training with the necessary skills to find success in the service, as well as a glimpse into the day-to-day life of an officer in the military.

All students in the ROTC program are expected to receive a bachelor’s degree of their choosing as well as complete the requirements to receive minor in military science. Upon completion of the program, each cadet is commissioned as a second lieutenant and assigned to train in their preferred career field.
