Weber State encourages community to ‘Bleed Purple’ during 22nd Blood Battle
OGDEN, Utah — It’s time for Weber State University and the surrounding community to roll up their sleeves and give at the 22nd annual American Red Cross Blood Battle, hosted at WSU Sept. 8–12.
The Blood Battle pits WSU against Utah State University in a friendly competition to see which school can supply the most blood. Since the competition began, the schools have collected more than 20,000 units of blood to give to those in need.
“Reaching the 20,000 milestone was a huge marker of success. Both communities rally around these drives and show up ready to donate during a time where historically donations are down nationwide,” said Michael Smauldon, executive director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah and Southwest Wyoming Chapter. “We’re excited to be back on campus and continue this tradition.”
The event is open to students, staff, faculty, and community members. Although all types of blood are in demand, more O positive and B negative blood is needed due to their unique qualities. All blood donors will receive a commemorative t-shirt while supplies last.
Blood donations will be accepted at the Shepherd Union Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the week of Sept. 8. Donors can make an appointment to give blood or platelets by visiting the Red Cross website or mobile app, or by calling 1-800-733-2767.
Use the sponsor code BLEEDPURPLE to find donation times. Walk-ins are also welcome.
