“One of the neat things about community education is that you can develop courses and programs for a variety of interests, needs and age groups,” said Thomas Borg, Community Education program administrator. “The classes not only help people in their own personal interests, whether it be hobbies or recreation, but also provide professional touch up as well.”

For instance, Joshua Petersen, Community Education instructor, will teach How to Become a Freelance Illustrator. Participants will learn to illustrate children’s books and how to market their art. “My philosophy is that you need to be able to sell your art,” he said. “If you don’t sell your art, you're going to be working somewhere else. You need a brand, a style. I teach my courses with that in mind. It's all how to market yourself and how to make your style shine, so people will pay thousands of dollars for it. I need an audience for my art to thrive.” Although the COVID-19 pandemic affected enrollment in previous community education courses, things are beginning to change.

“We think a lot of people are anxious to get out and do things, and our enrollments during spring semester seem to bear that out,” Borg said.

For those who are seeking to develop new skills during the pandemic, Community Education courses provide an easy way to learn while connecting with the community. Shane Farver, Online & Continuing Education marketing director, said, “Community education is really about lifelong learning and learning for the sake of learning. If I were to describe community education holistically, I guess it would be those things you always wanted to try but never thought you had a chance.”
