WSU Honors Winners of Speech Showcase

OGDEN, Utah – Every fall and spring semester, the best speaker from each of the sections of Principles of Public Speaking (Communication 1020), a general education class, compete on Selection Saturday to become a finalist during the Speech Showcase sponsored by the Department of Communication. Five finalists will perform their speeches for the public and receive a cash prize on April 21 at 7 p.m. in Elizabeth Hall Room 229. The event is free and open to the public.

The finalist and their topics are:

  • Amberlee Stewart – The Power of Perseverance
  • Daniela Imbrett – The Immigrant Dream
  • Coleman Barrett – Breadth of Love
  • Kobe Hales – Remembering Grant
  • Ky Jackson – DID: Deceivers In Denial

Students in the public speaking courses classes analyze a number of subjects and present ideas from different viewpoints.

“I think the most impactful thing is the ability to objectively reason and present ideas and incorporate ideas into their learning and thinking,” said Mark Galaviz, head coach of speech at Weber State. “Forensics speech opens the mind to the idea of different possibilities and helps expand one's worldview.”

The communication department in Weber State University’s Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts & Humanities hosts Speech Showcase every fall and spring semester.
