Weber State President Joins ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge Presidents Council to Promote Student Voting

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University President Brad Mortensen will serve on the Presidents Council for the 2022 ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge

Mortensen joins a group of 15 college and university presidents charged with supporting senior leaders in higher education to foster nonpartisan democratic engagement on their campuses.

The Presidents Council will lead more than 330 college and university presidents, provosts, and chancellors who have committed to full student voter registration and participation in the 2022 midterm elections through the ALL IN Presidents’ Commitment. The council will be chaired by Jonathan Alger, President of James Madison University. A full list of Presidents Council members is available here

Weber State has previously participated in the 2016, 2018 and 2020 ALL IN Democracy Challenges with the goal of increasing voting registration and participation among students. In 2020, WSU was awarded a Bronze Seal for reaching 50.3% voter turnout rate and was awarded Best Campus Plan for the Big Sky Conference.

“Few things could be more impactful for our Weber State students than learning to vote and committing themselves to civic engagement,” Mortensen said. “I'm honored to join with other college and university leaders to promote the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge and make campus voter registration efforts a priority across the country.”

College students have historically voted at one of the lowest rates of any group in the United States. While voter turnout among college students jumped to a record high of 66% in the 2020 presidential election, according to a new report from the Institute for Democracy and Higher Education, there is still work to be done to get students to continue to vote.

The Presidents’ Commitment is a part of the ALL IN Presidents Council’s mission to challenge institutions to make nonpartisan voter registration a priority on college campuses across the country. The members have committed to supporting all institutions with nonpartisan full student voter participation efforts. The full list of signatories can be found here.
