Weber State to Host Annual Sustainability Summit

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University will host the 13th annual Intermountain Sustainability Summit, March 16-18, bringing hundreds of sustainability professionals and emerging leaders together virtually to learn and network.

Through this year’s theme, “Reshaping Our Future,” participants will explore ways to help solve climate challenges. The theme invites attendees to engage in inquiry and innovative thinking for a sustainable and equitable future.

The virtual event will feature two keynote presentations, more than 50 locally and nationally renowned speakers, a student poster competition, ecologically focused art and workshops.

“The summit provides an exciting opportunity to connect with people across all sectors who share a common goal of building a more sustainable world,” said Alice Mulder, WSU’s Sustainability Practices and Research Center director. “We strive to create a space that encourages everyone to share their ideas, news, conundrums and solutions with each other. We hope participants find themselves rejuvenated by what they learn and the interactions they have.”

Breakout sessions will cover a broad array of topics such as renewable energy, green buildings, supply chain distribution, new economic models, climate resiliency, food security, water conservation, youth involvement and social justice.

The main summit day on March 17 will feature two keynote speakers: science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson, and Utah State University physics professor Robert Davies.

Robinson is a New York Times bestselling author with more than 20 titles to his name, including the international bestselling “Mars” trilogy. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Nature and Wired.

Davies is a physics professor with more than 20 years of experience in the field. For the past decade, he has focused on science communication, with an emphasis on global environmental change and sustainable human systems.

After their individual presentations, the two keynote presenters will come together for a third session to discuss their ideas for a more sustainable future. All sessions will be held via Zoom video conferencing.

In addition to the keynotes and breakout sessions, the summit will feature several workshops, March 16 and 18. Participants can choose from three half-day sessions. Workshop topics will include Utah’s water future, permaculture design and becoming a sustainability super champion.
