WSU radiologic sciences program attracts student with goal to treat cancer

OGDEN, Utah – When she was just 17, Reece Richardson moved across the Pacific Ocean to attend Weber State University with the hope of one day treating cancer patients.

Richardson graduated from high school in Hawaii at 16. One year later, after visiting four different universities, she enrolled at Weber State – not just for its radiologic sciences program, but the way she felt when she toured campus.

“Weber State really stuck out to me,” Richardson said. “The health sciences program is just out of this world, and I loved the campus and all the welcoming people I met.”

Richardson first became interested in radiology after tearing her ACL while playing competitive soccer. She was fascinated by the X-rays and MRI scans, and after hearing how fond the technicians were of their work, she started researching.

“While I was researching different radiology careers, I found out about radiation therapy, which is awesome,” Richardson said. “You get to come up with treatment plans and work so closely with your patients while treating their cancer. It’s really exciting and it inspired me.”

After completing her general studies, Richardson applied to the School of Radiologic Sciences and was accepted on her first try. Though she struggled with her studies at the beginning of the program, her professors saw her potential and nominated her to be a supplemental instructor for her anatomy and physiology course.

“My professors knew what I could do before I did, and they pushed me to do it,” she said. “All the professors here find opportunities for you and they advocate for you.”

While completing her studies, Richardson and a fellow classmate are also participating in a new cross-training program with McKay Dee Hospital where they’re getting experience with CT scans and X-rays at an accelerated pace.

Richardson will graduate this spring with an associate’s degree in radiologic sciences with plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy.

“The first words that come to mind when I think of Weber State are supportive and cultivating,” Richardson said. “Weber State invites you in, assesses you and does what it needs to do to help you be your best.”
