WSU Theatre Presents ‘The 39 Steps’

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University theatre program will present a production of “The 39 Steps,” a two-time Tony Award winning play based on the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name, beginning Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Val A. Browning Center Eccles Theater.

“In this challenging, high-octane year of politics, I think it will be a wonderful way to escape into a world of laughs and adventure,” said Tracy Callahan, WSU theatre professor and director. “It's a rapid-fire play that leans into all the jokes, heightens the drama and is full of comedy. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so I am delighted to be directing this as our kick-off to the 2020 year.”

A tribute to Hitchcock, “The 39 Steps” packs espionage, plane chases, murder and romance into a thrilling comedic adventure. The play follows the story of Richard Hannay; an ordinary man, down on his luck, who becomes entangled in a series of high-stakes escapades.

The play has garnered several awards, including two Tony Awards, one for Best Lighting Design in a Play and one for Best Sound Design in a Play; and two Drama Desk Awards, one for Outstanding Lighting Design and one for Unique Theatrical Experience.

Complete with costume changes and dialogue, a cast of only four actors plays over 100 characters in this fast-paced tale.

“Having been a fan of Hitchcock's films all my life, I was excited to find a script that pays homage to his talents by way of high comedic action and adventure,” Callahan said. “I am always looking for projects that will challenge our acting students and this production will certainly do that.”

The production will run Feb. 21-22 and 26-29 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Feb. 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at weberstatetickets.com or at the Browning Center box office, Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets are $13 for adults, $11 for seniors/military and $8.25 for students.
