Booting Up a Software Boot Camp

More than 100 software engineers from Hill Air Force Base went to boot camp of a different kind over the summer thanks to WSU’s Military Outreach team and School of Computing.

Those employees received training in beginning and intermediate Python, Java and C# programming languages. In addition, they received instruction in Azure DevOps (cloud computing) and took a prep course for taking the Certified Information Systems Security Professional test.

The noncredit, seven-course boot camp all started because Stephen Fairclough, a Hill Air Force Base engineering and workforce development training manager, requested training  through Military Outreach office of WSU’s Division of Online & Continuing Education (DOCE).  

Military Outreach team members Jeff Stuart and Henry Kiester worked with three WSU instructors — Matt Paulson, Hugo Valle and Yong Zhang — to develop the trainings that Fairclough requested. The instruction took place at Weber State University Davis’s new Computer & Automotive Engineering Building. Another round of trainings is expected to take place for students who couldn’t attend in the summer.

This is just one example of DOCE’s support of Hill Air Force Base and other military and defense entities. The WSU organization continues to manage the base’s sponsored students in the Master of Business Administration program and Certificate of Aerospace Financial Management. Both programs prepare students for leadership in their respective fields.
