Bachelor of Arts in English

The BA in the Department of English is designed for students who are passionate about reading and writing, who like being creative, and who want to develop professional skills for their careers.

You will learn to research, analyze, think and write clearly. Nearly every company in the world seeks employees with excellent presentation and writing skills — skills you will develop while earning your degree.

Bachelor of Arts in English, Creative Writing Emphasis

The emphasis in creative writing helps you develop and hone skills in writing original poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Beginning, intermediate and advanced workshops provide thoughtful feedback.

During your time in the creative writing program, you’ll get one-on-one mentorship from our nationally recognized faculty and have tons of opportunities to create and share your work. Our recent graduates have gone on to top 25 MFA programs and elite low-residency programs, and to publish books or create their own magazines.

Bachelor of Arts in English, Professional & Technical Writing Emphasis

The emphasis in professional and technical writing will teach you to communicate technical, and often complex, information to various audiences in a clear, concise and usable way. Technical writing applies to every discipline and industry.

During your time in the professional and technical writing program, you’ll hone your writing skills and work with real clients to produce a variety of technical documents.

Associate of Arts in English

The Associate of Arts degree in the Department of English is designed for students passionate about reading and writing, who like being creative, and who want to develop professional skills for their careers. This program lets students earn an Associate’s degree with 60 credit hours. It also forms the foundation for pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in English or related fields.

Minor in English

The English minor consists of 21 credit hours of coursework with a variety of classes in writing, language and literature that complement any major. In this minor, you’ll develop marketable skills in creative and critical thinking, writing and organization. You’ll also explore literature and address the big issues of humanity — identity, meaning, purpose, love, death — that profoundly enrich both your inner and outer life. An English minor will equip you to create a successful and meaningful future.

 

Minor in Literary Editing

The literary editing minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework to provide you with the knowledge base, skills and practical experience you need to work in the publishing industry. You will learn the foundations of creative writing and editing, as well as layout and graphics, and put these skills to use in an internship or working with WSU’s Metaphor.

Minor/Certificate in Professional & Technical Writing

The professional and technical writing minor consists of 18 credit hours of coursework that will teach you to communicate technical information to various audiences in a clear and concise way. Technical writing applies to every discipline and industry. During your professional and technical writing minor, you’ll hone your writing skills and work with real clients to produce a variety of technical documents. With a required internship, you’ll develop the skills you need to successfully navigate the professional and technical writing world.
