What is CLS?

Clinical laboratory sciences is a health care profession with special expertise in laboratory medicine.

CLS professionals, often called medical laboratorians, are vital healthcare detectives, uncovering and providing information from laboratory analyses that assist physicians in patient diagnosis and treatment, as well as in disease monitoring or prevention.

These scientists use sophisticated biomedical instrumentation and technology to perform laboratory testing on blood and body fluids, encompassing such disciplines as clinical chemistry, hematology, hemostais, immunology, immunohematology, clinical microbiology, toxicology, molecular biology and much more.

CLS professionals generate accurate laboratory data needed to aid in detecting conditions such as cancer, heart attacks, diabetes and identification of infectious pathogens, as well as detecting drugs of abuse. In addition, they monitor testing quality and consult with other members of the healthcare team.
