Weber State University was the first school in the world to develop an online Clinical Laboratory Sciences program for both AAS and BS degrees, beginning in 2001. This program is an innovation in advancing working professionals to Clinical Laboratory Technicians (CLT/MLT) or to Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS/MT). Students from all over the world participate inWSU's program.

The WSU Clinical Laboratory Sciences programs are organized into a "ladder" format, with the four-year curriculum divided into two programs. The Clinical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Technician program comprises the first two years of the program.

As a CLT student, you will focus on learning about each of the major areas of clinical laboratory sciences, such as clinical laboratory practices, hematology, chemistry, microbiology and bloodbank.  In each of these classes, in addition to the didactic ("lecture") portion of the course that is delivered online, you will focus on laboratory competencies that will be completed in the laboratory where you are employed.

Support courses and general education requirements can be taken either through the WSU online program or at your nearby university or college. We will work with that university to transfer these credits to WSU for them to count toward your degree.

If you apply, are accepted into, and graduate from the CLT/MLT program, you will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree. You are then eligible to sit for national certification examinations and enter the workforce. The average starting salary for a clinical laboratory technician is $31,200.

If you wish to continue on for a four-year degree, you must apply and be accepted into the Bachelor of Science Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technology program (CLS/MT).
