What is Induction Cooking?

  • Induction cooking produces instant, precise heat without flames.
  • Induction cooktops use electricity to power a copper coil beneath a ceramic-glass surface, generating an oscillating magnetic field. When magnetic cookware is placed on top, this field causes the metal to vibrate and heat up directly through resistance, making the pan itself the heat source, not the cooktop.

Key Considerations: 

  • Compatible Cookware: Any pot or pan with a flat bottom that a magnet sticks to will work with an induction cooktop.
  • Type: There are a variety of options: portable cooktop units that plug into a standard wall outlet, hardwired cooktops, and ranges with both a cooktop and electric convection oven.
  • Electrical Outlets: Induction cooktops typically need a 240 volt outlet. If you don't have one, an electrician can install one or you can consider a new 120 volt option that includes an integrated battery system. An electrician can check your outlet and provide guidance. 
  • Safety Features: Some common features to consider include auto-shutoff, child lock, and pan detection
