Course Requirements for CLS BS Degree


Credit Hour Requirements
A total of 125-133 credit hours is required for graduation (including those credit required for an AAS in CLT) ; 31 are required general education courses, 27-34 are required support courses, and 23-34 are required CLS courses,

General Education Requirements
Refer to the General Requirements for Bachelor of Science degree requirements. General education requirements for the BS degree can be taken prior to or concurrently with the CLS program. However, you must complete all BS general education requirements to earn the CLS degree. 

  • 6 credit hours Composition
  • 3 credit hours American Institutions
  • 3 credit hours Quantitative Literacy
  • 4 credit hours Computer Literacy
  • 3 credit hours Diversity
  • 9 credit hours Creative Arts & Humanities
  • 6 credit hours Social Sciences
  • 9 credit hours Physical/Life Sciences *
  • 7 credit hours Scientific Inquiry **

* The following courses will fulfill both general education and program support course requirements for Physical/Life Sciences: CHEM PS/SI1110, CHEM PS/SI1210, HTHS LS1110, MICR LS1113, MICR LS/SI2054, and PHYS PS/SI1010. (Also listed below under support courses.)

** Scientific Inquiry will be satisified by completing the required CLS courses: CLS 3302 (4) and CLS 3314 (3).

Some requirements may be met by ACT, CLEP, and/or AP scores as designated by the University (contact the Admissions Office for more information).


Support Courses for CLS BS Degree:
27-34 credit hours (includes 21-27 AAS CLT credits hours and 6/7 upper division CLS BS credits)

In addition to the Gen Ed and CLS courses, you will need to complete the following upper division support courses:

  • MICR 3254 Immunology (with lab) (4)
        OR MICR 3810 Immunology (without lab)  (3)
        OR HTHS 3328 Pathophysiology of Cells & Tissues (2)
             AND HTHS 3329 Pathophysiology of Organs & Systems (2)
  • MICR 3603 Medical Microbiology  (3)
        OR HIM 3200 Epidemiology and Biostatistics (3)

CLS Courses Required for BS Degree:
You must be accepted into the CLS program to enroll in any of the CLS courses. In addition to the requirements for the AAS CLT (clinical laboratory technician) degree the following CLS courses are required:

Track I (for those intending to work as clinical laboratory scientists)
69 credit hours (includes 33 AAS CLT credit hours and 35 upper division BS CLS credits)
