Course Requirements for CLT AAS Degree

A total of 69-75 credit hours is required for graduation; 33 of these are required CLT (Clinical Laboratory Technician) courses, 21-27 are required support courses, and 15 are required general education courses.


General Education for AAS Degree:
Refer to General Requirements for Associate of Applied Science requirements, for the following:

  • 6 credit hours Composition
  • 3 credit hours Creative Arts & Humanities
  • 3 credit hours Quantitative Literacy
  • 3 credit hours Social Sciences
  • 3 credit hours Physical/Life Sciences *

* The following courses will fulfill both general education and program support course requirements for Physical/Life Sciences: CHEM PS/SI1110, CHEM PS/SI1210, HTHS LS1110, MICR LS1113, MICR LS/SI2054, and PHYS PS/SI1010. (Also listed below under support courses)

Some requirements may be met by ACT, CLEP, and/or AP scores as designated by the university (contact the Admissions Office for more information).

General education requirements for the AAS degree can be taken prior to, or concurrently, with the CLT program. However, you must complete all AAS general education requirements to earn the CLT degree.


Support Courses for AAS Degree:
There are two curriculum paths available for CLT students:

Track I is for those who intend to work as clinical laboratory scientists. Upon graduation, you will first take a national registry exam that will qualify you to work in hospital or clinic laboratories.  Positions are also available in industrial labs, education, medical sales, medical research, forensics, medical administration, cytology, histology, etc.
Track I support courses consist of the following 21 credit hours:

  • CHEM 1110 Elementry Chemistry (5)  F, S
  • CHEM 1120 Elementry Organic/Biochemistry (5)  S
  • HTHS 1110 Biomedical Core I (4)  F, S, Su
  • HTHS 1111 Biomedical Core II (4) F, S, Su
  • MICR 1113 Microbiology (3)  F, S, Su

Track II (pre-professional) is for students who are planning to apply to medical, physician assistant, dental, veterinary, or other graduate schools.  In addition to CLS courses, this track also includes pre-professional course requirements that are specific for medical or graduate schools.  For more information, see the Track II suggested course sequence for an AAS and BS in clinical laboratory sciences.
Track II support courses consist of the following 27 credit hours:

  • CHEM 1210 Principles of Chemistry I (5)  F, S, Su
  • CHEM 1220 Principles of Chemistry II (5)  F, S, Su
  • CHEM 2310 Organic Chemistry (5)
  • ZOOL 2100 Anatomy (4)
  • ZOOL 2200 Physiology (4)
  • MICR 2054 Microbiology (4)  F, S, Su


CLT Courses for AAS Degree:
The following courses are required for CLT AAS degree consisting of 33 credit hours:

  • CLS 1113  Intro to Clinical Laboratory Practices (4)  F, S, Su
  • CLS 1123  Principles of Clinical Hematology and Hemostasis (5) F, S, Su

You must be accepted into the CLT program to enroll in the follwoing CLT courses:

  • CLS 2211  Principles of Clinical Chemistry I (5)   F
  • CLS 2212  Principles of Clinical Microbiology I (4)  F
  • CLS 2213  Principles of Clinical Chemistry II (5)  S
  • CLS 2214  Principles of Clinical Microbiology II (4)  S
  • CLS 2215  Principles of Clinical Immunohematology (4) S
  • CLS 2256  Supervised Clinical Experience I (1)   Su
  • CLS 2257  Supervised Clinical Experience II (1)   Su


Recommended Support Course

  • CLS 2003  Applied Lab Math & Statistics * (3) F

*Will satisfy the Quantitative Literacy requirement for AAS degree.
