Dr. Frank Guliuzza is Chair of the Department of Political Science & Philosophy at Weber State University. Additionally, he serves as the University's Due Process Officer, Pre-law Adviser, and coaches Weber State's nationally-ranked intercollegiate mock trial team.
Dr. Guliuzza received his bachelors and masters degree from the University of Wyoming. He is the first member of his family to attend college and was fortunate to receive a full scholarship for speech and debate, having captured the Wyoming state championship in debate while attending Cheyenne Central High School. At the University of Wyoming, he made both the Deans List and the Presidents List, he was captain of the speech and debate team, and he finished second in persuasive speaking at the Delta Sigma Rho/Tau Kappa Alpha national championship tournament. After he left Wyoming, Dr. Guliuzza earned a Master of Divinity degree from Southern Seminary and was awarded his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame. He came to Weber State University after teaching for a year at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
While at Weber State University, Dr. Guliuzza has been recognized twice for Outstanding Teaching in Political Science by the American Political Science Association and was awarded the Endowed Professor in the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. Earlier this year, Dr. Guliuzza was presented with what is perhaps Weber State University's most prestigious faculty honor: the John S. Hinckley Fellow award for excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship.
Dr. Guliuzza is the current President of the Western Association of Pre-Law Advisors and sits on the Pre-Law Advisors National Council. Further, he is on the Executive Board of the American Collegiate Moot Court Association, is a candidate member of the Board of Directors for the American Mock Trial Association, and is Chairman of Trustees at Mountain View Baptist Church.
Dr. Guliuzza founded the Weber State University mock trial team in 1996 and, under his direction, Weber State has earned six top-ten finishes at national tournaments in intercollegiate mock trial and moot court. Furthermore, his students have captured championships at two regional tournaments and at three invitational tournaments; the program can boast of eight All-Americans and 27 All-Regional competitors.
A licensed minister, Dr. Guliuzza has spoken in several churches throughout the United States and has served in ecclesiastical positions at Calvary Baptist Church in Ogden, First Baptist Church in Brigham City, and Mountain View Baptist Church in Layton.
Dr. Guliuzza has published articles and reviews in a number of journals including The Marquette Law Review, The Drake Law Review, The Willamette Law Review, The Journal of Politics, The Review of Politics, American Political Science Review, and Academe. In addition, he has and authored a book entitled, Over the Wall: Protecting Religious Expression in the Public Square.
In 2000, Dr. Guliuzza ran for the United States Senate and, in August 2001, he was elected Vice Chairman of the Utah Republican Party. He has been married to the former Kathy Spaulding for 21 years and is the foster parent of two children, Matthew Williamson and Timothy Stoddard.
