English Automatic Placement

Your English placement is based on your ACT college admissions test English and reading (E&R) scores from within the past 48 months. If you took the SAT college admissions test, that score is converted to an ACT equivalent.

Contact the Department of English (801-626-6251) to verify your ACT score and override prerequisites as needed.

These tables show where your ACT or SAT English and reading scores place you.

Note: The lower of your two scores is used to determine your placement.

Completing Your Composition Requirement

Your placement shows where you need to begin in one of these course sequences to fulfill your English Composition requirement:

  • ENGL 0900 → ENGL 0955 → ENGL 1010 → ENGL 2010 or
  • ESL courses → ENGL 1010 → ENGL 2010 (for non-native English speakers)

To satisfy your Composition requirement, you must earn a C or better in ENGL 2010. Some Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees only require successful completion of ENGL 1010.
