Shannon B. Roberts
Director of Bands
Originally from Vista, California, Dr. Shannon Roberts is a nationally known composer, arranger, conductor, author, clinician, and music educator. He is currently the Director Bands at Weber State University. He has been the director for the Marching & Pep Bands, Jazz Ensemble, and Symphonic Bands. He also teaches music theory/composition, form and analysis, counterpoint and is the Area Head for Winds and Percussion students. Dr. Roberts is also an adjudicator for Heritage Music Festivals. He is the new Musical Director/Conductor of the Ogden City Concert Band and a regular guest conductor for the New American Philharmonic. He also performs at the Jazz at the Stationseries and with many professional musical groups in Utah. He is a member of CBDNA, MENC, UMEA, and Phi Kappa Phi.
Dr. Roberts holds Ph.D. and Master of Music degrees in music composition from the University of Utah; a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the United States International University in San Diego, California; an Associate of Arts Degree in Applied Arts from San Diego Mesa College; and is a graduate of the United States Navy School of Music in Little Creek, Virginia.
As a brass specialist on trombone, trumpet and tuba; he has played for many professional shows and national artists like: Tad Calcara’s New Deal Swing Orchestra, Disney’s Aladdin & Little Mermaid, Hairspray, The Wayne Newton Band, Eddie Daniels, Frank Sinatra Jr., Dee Daniels, Spanky Wilson, Jeff Hamilton, Maureen McGovern, and the Manhattan Transfer, The Great Basin St. Band, and the Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra.
Dr. Roberts has won many state and national awards for teaching including: WSU Crystal Crest Master Teacher Award Nominee-2013, 2015 & 2017; Teacher of the Year Award Finalist-2011, Dixie State College; The National Society of High School Scholars Nobel Educator of Distinction-2010; KSL News Radio & Zions Bank’s Teacher Feature, 2009; Utah PTA/KUED Golden Apple Award Outstanding Educator, Region III-2008-2009; Student Choice Award-University of Utah, 1996.
He recently has composed original music for Concert Band, Brass Ensemble, Jazz Band, Dixieland Band, Marching Band, Pep Band and Chamber Ensembles, including the world première of three new works: Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Band, Celebración del Centenario(Spanish Fantasy for Trumpet and Band); Folk Dance for Brass Trio; and Congruens (Symmetrical Proportions) In Three Movements for Trombone, Solo Multiple Percussion & Piano. His jazz music is published through Walrus Publishing out of New York.
Prior to coming to Weber State University, he was an Associate Professor of music at Dixie State College of Utah where he was the head of the music theory & composition area. He also directed the Dixie College Brass Ensemble and taught the trombone/euphonium studio. He performed regularly on trombone with the Southwest Symphony and the Tuachan Pit Orchestra. He is the former Director of Bands at Woods Cross High School in Woods Cross, Utah. His band program won state and national honors as being among the best high school programs in the country.
He is the former Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Utah and was the Director of Jazz Ensemble One for ten years. Before moving to Utah to pursue doctoral studies, Dr. Roberts was the Musical Director for Sea World of San Diego and a local studio musician and arranger. He taught high school and community college at several Southern California schools, was a Staff Arranger, Drum Major and Euphonium soloist with the United States Navy Band in San Diego, and played Euphonium for the Disneyland Circus Band. While at Vista High School, he was a member of McDonald's All-American High School Band, the California State Honor Band, and California Boy's State. He was an SBO, Band President, Co-Captain of the Varsity Track Team and the starting left cornerback on the varsity football team.
