Scouting: Award and Badge Programs Offered by Ott Planetarium

Astronomy Badge for Boy Scouts

Our astronomy badge program is done in two parts: Part 1 is done online and Part 2 is done in the planetarium.

• Scouts MUST complete Part 1 before coming to the planetarium.  This includes watching the videos, taking the quiz and printing out the completed quiz with the Scout's name on it.  To begin Part 1, use the Drop-Down menu at the top of this page in the Scouts heading.

• Reservations and a base fee of $80 are required for Part 2.

The program is 2 hours and there is an $80 minimum for the program.  If you have more than 12 Scouts, or other attendees who are NOT leaders, they each must pay $5 for admission, in addition to the base fee of $80.  For example, if a troop has 17 Scouts, 5 Moms and Dads and siblings and 3 Leaders, the total amount will be $130.  [Break down: $80 (base fee), plus $25 additional Scouts (17 Scouts - 12 Scouts = 5 Scouts @ $5 each), plus $25 additional attendees (5 Moms and Dads and siblings, for example), plus $0 (3 Leaders, who are free)--- $80+$25+$25 +$0 = $130.]

NOVA Out Of This World Award and other awards for Cub Scouts

  • We have a two-hour NOVA Out Of This World program for Cub Scouts.
  • We present information for Scouts to be able to earn this award after they complete part of the requirements before they complete the requirements at the Ott Planetarium.  The section below is from Scouting.org and must be completed before Scouts arrive for the NOVA program at Ott Planetarium.
"2. Complete ONE adventure from the following list for your current rank or complete option A or B. (Choose an Adventure you have not already earned.) Discuss with your counselor what kind of science, technology, engineering, and math was used in the adventure or option.
Option A: .... (a) Demonstrate how to focus a simple telescope or binoculars. (A local astronomy club may be a resource for this activity.)"

NOTE: We do NOT have the NOVA awards, nor do we sign off on anything.  We only present the content that covers the requirements from the BSA.
