Course Requirements for MLS BS Degree

Credit Hour Requirements

A total of 120 credit hours is required for graduation; comprised of general education, support courses, and core MLS courses. 

General Education Requirements

Refer to the general requirements for Bachelor of Science degree requirements. General education requirements for the BS degree can be taken prior to or concurrently with the MLS program.

  • 6 credit hours Composition
  • 3 credit hours American Institutions
  • 3 credit hours Quantitative Literacy
  • 1 credit hour Computer Information
  • 3 credit hours Diversity
  • 9 credit hours Creative Arts & Humanities
  • 6 credit hours Social Sciences
  • 9 credit hours Physical/Life Sciences *

* The following courses will fulfill both general education and program support course requirements for Physical/Life Sciences: CHEM PS/SI1110, CHEM PS/SI1210, HTHS LS1110, MICR LS1113, MICR LS/SI2054, and PHYS PS/SI1010. (Also listed below under support courses.)

Some requirements may be met by ACT, CLEP, and/or AP scores as designated by the University (contact the Admissions Office for more information).
 

Support Courses for MLS BS Degree:

  • One of the following chemistry series:
    • CHEM 1110 Elementary Inorganic Chemistry (5 cr)  and CHEM 1120 Elementary Organic/Biochemistry (5 cr) or equivalent
    • CHEM 1210 General Chemistry I ( 5 cr) and CHEM 1220 General Chemistry II (5 cr) and CHEM 2310 Organic Chemistry (5 cr)
  • HTHS 1110 Anatomy and Physiology I (4 cr) or equivalent
  • HTHS 1111 Anatomy and Physiology II (4 cr) or PHYS 1010 Physics I (4 cr) or equivalent
  • MICR 1113 General Microbiology (3 cr) or equivalent
  • HAS 4400 Legal and Ethical Aspects of Health Administration  (3)
    • OR HIM 3200 Epidemiology and Biostatistics (3)

MLS Courses Required for BS Degree:

You must be accepted into the MLS program to enroll in any of the MLS courses. In addition to the requirements for the AAS MLT degree the following MLS courses are required:

Track I

(for those intending to work as medical laboratory scientists or who plan to apply to physician assistant or other graduate schools.)
