Teacher Relicensure at Weber State University

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) has authorized WSU to offer an online, seven-week teacher relicensure course. The course, Current Issues, Topics and Practices in Education (MED 6920), is tailored to meet your needs. Choose between earning 50, 100, 150 or 200 licensure points in order to get back to the classroom. See descriptions of the points available below.

50 points

To earn 50 points, complete the following three modules:
Technology 1
Discover how to use Canvas as a teaching and learning tool.

Current Laws, Issues & Ethics
Focus on current federal and state laws that impact k-12 education, and discover the issues associated with them.

The Core and More
Review current core curricula and lesson planning techniques for today’s classroom.

Block III: May. 02, 2022 – June 17, 2022

100 Points

For 100 points, complete all of the modules in the 50-point category and the following additional modules:
Diversity/ESL
Recognize the many aspects of multicultural education and their effects on today’s more-diverse classroom. You will also learn several teaching strategies that will help all of your students, especially those who speak English as a second language (ESL).

Exceptionality
Get an update on special education law and practice as it relates to the general classroom. We will discuss the responsibilities of general educators and methods for including students with special needs in the general classroom.

Classroom Management 1
This module will review concepts and strategies to help manage the challenges that exist in today’s diverse classroom settings. We will discuss a variety of philosophical approaches to management with an additional focus on students who are at risk for failure.

150 Points

For 150 points, complete all of the modules in the 50- and 100-point categories, as well as the following additional modules:
Planning for All Learners
Engage in long-term planning based on the core curricula, students’ needs and the context of instruction.

Accountability & Assessment
Review basic concepts of assessment including the purposes of classroom and large-scale assessment, alignment with objectives, types of assessment and current accountability issues.

Explore the many technology-based tools available to enhance teaching and learning. Use tools for both instruction and assessment.

200 points

For 200 points, complete all of the modules in the 50-, 100- and 150-point categories, as well as the following additional modules:
Classroom Management II
Gain management techniques using Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

Assessment II
Expand on assessment concepts to include scoring, decision-making (grading) and assessment-development strategies. In addition, explore sources of assessment items, critique of those items and learn how to write different assessments.
