Student Stories

Trevor, economics, 17TREVOR FURNER
Economics; emphasis in legal studies '17

"I grew up in South Jordan Utah. Immediately after graduating high school I began attending classes at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). I worked in the Heating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) field full-time, so night classes were my only option. Unfortunately I did not take my studies seriously. I was more concerned with trying to do the least amount of work needed to pass my classes instead of trying to get the most I could out of my classes. Eventually I dropped out of SLCC and focused primarily on my HVAC job. I ended up as a lead installer, managing both residential and commercial projects. Eventually I came to the realization that I my body couldn't sustain the rigors of the construction industry. I was 27 with a bad back, a bad knee, and Carpal Tunnel in both wrists. I got a job in retail management which allowed just enough time for me to enroll at classes at Weber State."

WHY WEBER?

"Weber State was a great fit for me since I was living and working in Davis County. Also, Weber State's class schedule allowed me to keep my full-time job while still being able to enroll in classes full-time."

WHY SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT?

"I chose my major based on my intent to attend law school. After talking to some friends who are attorneys, talking to professors within the Goddard School, and Goddard's academic advisors I decided changing my major from Business Administration to Economics."

INCREDIBLE ACCESS

"I had too many great experiences with the Economics faculty to list here. I was fortunate enough to be able to work on a research project for three semester with Dr. Keinsley. This research project was not part of any of his classes, but he was still more than willing to take time out of his busy day to help me with this project. Dr. Keinsley went above and beyond what was expected of him by teaching me how to analyze and run statistical regressions on time series data, something he wasn't taught until graduate school. Being able to work one-on-one with him on this project I feel I was able to gain a much deeper understanding about topic I was researching.

On my first day at Weber State I was waiting in the hall for my last class of the day to start. Dr. Matt Gnagey came around the corner when, I had his class earlier in the day. He stopped and said something along the lines of, "Hey Trevor, how is your day going?" I was blown away that a professor would remember my name, let alone after the first day of class. My amazement continued as we actually carried on a conversation in the halls of the Goddard building. I expressed my concerns I had in taking his class, Business Statistics. It was my first semester back in roughly seven years, and closer to nine years since I had stepped foot in a math course. He told me that he had also taken a "break" in his studies and he understood the concerns I had. He assured me that I would be fine, and if I needed any help he had office hours I could take advantage of, he also informed me of the "Quant Lab" in the Goddard School I could go to for help as well. Throughout the rest of my time at Weber, there were many days I found myself in Dr. Gnagey's office getting advice on anything from research topics, law school application questions, or just "catching up." I was astonished when I got an invitation to lunch with him. I was even more astonished when he asked me if I had any ideas on how he should teach his Intro to Microeconomics class. Why was a professor asking a student how he should teach his class? Talk about a way to boost a students self esteem!

I feel bad because I have had so many great experiences with so many faculty members in the Goddard School, that I cannot begin to list them all here. I don't think there is one professor I took a class from in the Goddard School that I didn't have at least one great experience with."

ADVICE

"The professors truly want you to take advantage of their office hours. I think it is safe to say that I learned more sitting in my professors office's than I did in class. It is the perfect opportunity to work one-on-one and clarify any question you have on the material. You are not putting the professors out, the enjoy when you show the initiative learn."

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

"I am currently waiting to hear back from the law schools I have recently applied to. I plan to start law school at the beginning of the 2018 school year. I have a couple schools that have accepted me with scholarships, and others I am waiting to hear back from."

I look forward to taking the lessons I have learned from my time at the Goddard School into my studies at law school. I was able to learn how to research, build relationships with professors, how to enjoy learning tough and challenging topics, among many other things. These lessons and experiences will aid me in my law school studies along with my future career."
