“The required and elective classes are truly relevant and fitting for the business professional. The program gives you a well-rounded knowledge of all areas of business. The professors are exceptionally good, knowledgeable and want to see you succeed and benefit from the program. Nice to have someone in your corner.

WHY WEBER STATE?

After graduating with my BS in accounting from the University of Utah, I was “done” with school. I wasn’t mentally ready to get my MBA. I wanted to get out and work in my profession and apply what I had learned. As the years passed, while I steadily progressed in my career, I always had in the back of my mind that I wanted to earn my MBA. I actually applied to BYU and was accepted but it just wasn’t the right time for me. Several years passed and the timing seemed good, so I applied to the MBA program at Weber and thankfully I was accepted.

WHY MBA?

The MBA program at Weber State catered to a working professional like myself. The 8-week course schedule supported me in attending part-time, taking two classes a semester while only driving to campus one night a week. The non-cohort structure allowed me to take courses at my own pace, allowing me to set a graduation date that fit my schedule and needs. The MBA at Weber State was the most affordable program available while also maintaining the same accreditation standards as the larger-sized regional colleges.

INCREDIBLE ACCESS

The MBA program at the Goddard School of Business is so unique for a couple of reasons:
- It fits the demands of the working professionals (with or without a family) with the unique eight-week block class schedule and with classes conveniently held at the Davis campus one night a week. I really like the fact that you make your own schedule and go at your own pace.

- The required and elective classes are truly relevant and fitting for the business professional. The program gives you a well-rounded knowledge of all areas of business…from Organizational Behavior, to Project Management, to Finance and Macro Economics.  The professors are exceptionally good, knowledgeable and want to see you succeed and benefit from the program. Nice to have someone in your corner.

- Networking with other quality professionals is superior.

FACULTY IMPACT

Dr. Matt Mouritsen is by far the best teacher I had in graduate school. He was thorough. He listened and addressed everyone’s questions. He made me feel comfortable and important. He taught with excitement and his methods he used to teach class principle made them relevant and memorable. He was not interested in the grade students received on a test. His top priority was to ensure students understood subject concepts and best practices so they will implement them. After each classroom session, I was excited to go to work the next day and implement what I learned from professor Mouritsen.

Dr. Stevens was direct and a straight shooter. He made it fun and interesting with real-life examples of the principles and concepts. Part of his teaching method was in-class hands on role playing with critiquing. It was immensely powerful and stuck with me.

Dr. Stephenson was by far the toughest teacher in the MBA program and the toughest college professor I had. That said, I probably learned the most from her class. She explained difficult principles and concepts very well and ensured students understood them before she moved on. She assigned a lot of homework but once I finished the homework, I knew the material and was able to apply the principles in the “real world” to make a difference for my business and for me, personally.

ADVICE

If you are ready, do it while you are younger. I was a little older but it was the right time for me. That said, get your MBA when you are ready.

HOW HAS THE MBA PROGRAM IMPACTED YOU?

The MBA program at the Goddard School of Business has had a huge impact on both my professional career and me personally. I am better equipped with tools and knowledge to peel back the onion on complex problems, to solve them and implement strategies and ideas to improve my personal performance, the results of my team and therefore the results of the business as a whole.

WHERE ARE YOU NOW?

I am a CFO on the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) for a commercial truck dealership in the state of Washington. Never thought I would work for a truck dealership, but I absolutely love it. My career path has been perfect for me. Not sure I would change a thing. Upon graduating from the University of Utah, I worked in public accounting for a couple of years then went into the private sector. I worked for a software development company as an Assistant Controller. From there, went into the commercial truck dealership space as Controller then progressed as an executive CFO.
