CALVIN JENKINS
Business Administration; Human Resource Management '18

I grew up in the Ogden Valley on the family farm. I love to spend time in the kitchen honing my baking and cooking skills. I also love to spend time outside with my family. I grew up skiing and waters skiing with my dad and siblings.

WHY WEBER?

In all honesty I chose Weber because it was close. Growing up in the Ogden Valley I could live at my parents' place and commute to campus in ~30 minutes. After I had started here I realized just how amazing of a university it is. The small class sizes and the professors that have been so willing to coach and help me individually have been what has kept me here. Now, after +4 years at Weber I would say I bleed purple. I am a firm believer in what WSU is doing and the way they are doing it.

WHY BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION?

I am a Business Administration major and my emphasis is in Human Resource Management. I will be graduating in April of 2018.

I spent some time in a volunteer organization creating training programs and orchestrating the work of a number of small teams. I really enjoyed the work I did there and wanted to find a "real" job doing what I found to be so enjoyable so Human Resource Management seemed like the best way to go.

CAREER SERVICES

Career Services helped me look through, update, and refine my resume. They gave me leads on jobs and helped me connect with important individuals at companies I was interested in working for. When applying for jobs they helped connect me with individuals at the company I was applying at that helped me get interviews. And perhaps more importantly than anything else, in working with them they helped me think through what would be important for me in a job and pursue the jobs that would help me meet those goals.

INCREDIBLE ACCESS

The experience the most stands out to me is I sent an email to career services to see if they could connect me with anyone at a company I had just applied for, and within a few hours they had written me a very nice introduction letter to one of the supervisors at the company that happened to be a WSU student in the MBA program. This student was then able to introduce me to the hiring manager for the position I had applied for. That introduction played a key role in helping land an interview. I'm confident that it would have been much more of an uphill climb for me to have even been interviewed for that position if it wasn't for the assistance of the individuals in career services.

ADVICE

There are so many ways that career services can help, so be sure to utilize them for something. Even if it is nothing more that help going over your resume, they provide valuable insight to increase the likelihood of finding a great job or jobs. I'm sure that after sitting down with them and receiving their help students will recognize the value and seek for more help in their job search process.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

I have just started a job as an Human Resource Generalist. I am part time until I have graduated and then I will be full time with this company.

One of the biggest impact for me has been the opportunities I have had to be mentored by the professionals at the Goddard School, both the professors and the other staff that work in the college. The professors, in particular, have all been so good to work with and helped me to recognize my skills and latent competencies so that I can more readily add value to any group or organization that I work in.
