BRIAN
management information systems '22 (outstanding grad)

Times may be challenging, but when you look back at it, those challenging times are some of the most fulfilling experiences you'll ever have, so don't stop believing!

WHY WEBER STATE?

Before I graduated high school, I knew college was my next step.  I applied to multiple universities in Utah and got accepted to all 3, my choice came down to Weber State, they offered me a Merit Scholarship and their tuition rates were fair so I decided to go to Weber for my undergrad.

WHY MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS?

When I first enrolled at Weber State University for my undergraduate, I knew I wanted to do something with business, so I declared my major in Business Administration. It is a great degree but after completing some business core classes I felt that it was too broad, and I felt like developing a skill in a specialized industry would benefit me better for my future and keep me interested in what I do for a career. I then redeclared my major to Management Information Systems.

INCREDIBLE ACCESS

The class sizes are small which makes it a great environment to communicate with professors and peers.  The networking opportunities and the professor's investment in making your experience valuable are unmatched.  The Goddard School occupies elite talent and expertise in the professors in each respective department.  Through my classes in MIS, I have developed robust problem-solving skills, the ability to think critically, and great business skills. These skills are always in demand and will provide me with a competitive advantage in the IT & IS field.

FACULTY IMPACT

Brett Merrell is one of the best connections you can have at Weber State.  His suggestions and expertise have allowed me to grow my network and increase my confidence when it comes to resumes and job interviews.  Brett is a great guy and truly cares about your experience and success.  Working with Brett has been great and I am forever grateful for the impact he has had on me.

Matthew Thue is the best professor I have ever had at Weber State.  His teaching style and focus on key details make his classes fun and engaging.  His authenticity and recognition towards all people is something I admire.  If you get the chance to take a class from him, do it!

ADVICE

Choose the Goddard School! It is a very reputable school.  Whichever program you choose to pursue won't be easy, but the learning outcomes and opportunities that come your way are all worth it.  Make sure to network with professors and other resources in the Goddard School, and as you go through the journey of getting your degree don't forget to embrace the grind.  Times may be challenging, but when you look back at it, those challenging times are some of the most fulfilling experiences you'll ever have, so don't stop believing!

WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER ASPIRATIONS?

Currently, I work as an IT Project Manager at a software company that deals with inventory management; WarehouseOS.  My next step will be at the University of Utah where I will be enrolling in the Master of Science in Information Systems program in Fall 2022.  In completing this graduate program, I plan to use the skills acquired through the MSIS program to pursue a career in managerial roles in the IT & IS industry.
