  • Paying for College
    Students often wonder, “How do I pay for college? What does financial aid, student loans, and grants mean?” This is a discussion on how to successfully secure funding to attend college. Jayson Matlock will provide tips and resources to help pay for college.
     
  • Transitioning from High school to Postsecondary Education
    The more preparation and advice students receive throughout high school can help prepare them for a smoother transition to postsecondary education. Anthony Bates serves as the Director of the Student Connection and Leadership Center at BYU. He will share skills and best practices for transitioning from high school to postsecondary education.

Session 2 | 10:35 a.m. 

  • Student Mental Health/Self-Care
    Oftentimes students forget the importance of taking care of their mental health and wellbeing. This session will provide tips on how to pay attention to your mental health and apply self-care practices to your routine.
     
  • Leading on Campus
    A leader looks out for the wellbeing of others in their community, and advocates for the needs of others. University of Utah and Southern Utah University Student Body Presidents will speak about their journey to leadership and their experiences serving at their institutions.

  • Navigating high school & advocating for yourself 
    Alicia Kelly and Rose Renaud will discuss the importance of advocacy within your high school and how to navigate situations that may feel out of your control.
     
  • Exploring Degrees & Careers
    How often do you reflect on what your passions and interests are? Do you have a plan for what you would like to do after high school? This panel will discuss various degree options and career paths that students can explore.

It is important to have an awareness of what resources are offered through different organizations in the community that seek to uplift the Black/African-American community. Learn the stories of triumph and maintaining resilience from different community, activist, advocacy and mentoring organizations, and ways you can get involved.

    The Blackout is an engaging program highlighting the Black Experience from various perspectives. The Blackout brings together leadership, culture, performance, along with the sounds of our resident DJ ”Who keeps the energy high. Featuring micro speeches, spoken word exhibitions and special performances, this event is guaranteed to enlighten diverse audiences, educate any audience and celebrate Black culture.

  • A: “Where You’re Going: Career Skills for Upcoming New Professionals”, Damien Pitts
    College students begin their educational journey and are encouraged to select a major that will lead them to determine their interests, passions, goals towards a specific career field. Preparing yourself in college for career opportunities begins your first year and as you advance you sharpen your skills to land hands-on experience. Students will learn how to prepare their materials for applications and brush up on their interview skills for specific experiences in their respective career fields.

  • B: “While You’re There: Get Your Hustle On Through Entrepreneurship”, Student Entrepreneurs, Jerome Currelley, Shawn Newall, Laura Stireman- Utah Black Chamber
    Students have all kinds of talents and skills that may flourish into sustainable business opportunities to fund their education in the current moment and may possibly expand into building Black wealth. Learn how students and local professionals built their businesses and contribute to the community while finding success in working for themselves which may inspire you to launch your ideas.

    Life and our educational journey may not always go as planned or anticipated; however, we are taught to strive for excellence in all that we do. Excellence is in our DNA. Students will interact and engage with a phenomenal panel of professionals that have contributed to their fields in small and large ways. Be inspired to persist, thrive, and be excellent against all odds because we only know how to be great.

  • B: “On the Road to Greatness: Transition to Post Graduate Experiences”, Dr. Paula Smith, African-American Doctoral Scholars Initiative (AADSI), Tashelle Wright, McNair Scholars Program, Camille Isioma, JaTara Smith, Uchenna Ogbonnaya
    There are great opportunities that can open other doors ahead in your future. Some career fields require post graduate experiences whether it be an externship, fellowship, or beginning your graduate education to obtain an advanced degree. Hear from a panel of individuals that will provide great narratives, information and resources on making a successful transition to post graduate experiences.

  • A: “We’ll Rise Up: Activism and Social Justice on College Campuses”, Portia Anderson
    Black student leadership development influences the way Black leaders develop, build their consciousness, and navigate their college campuses to make them better places than when we arrived on them. Students will learn how through their activism they can strive to increase their awareness of the structures in place at their institutions, build a strategic vision for their organization, and elevate their platforms to advance their goals and impact on the black student experience at predominantly white institutions. It is critical for students to get out of the mindset of surviving the academy, but rather how to thrive in these spaces.

  • B: “CHOOSE: Mix Generation Identity Students ”, Robert N. Page, Jr.
    The interactive and engaging workshop will provide the opportunity for discussion around identity development for multi-racial students.  The program will explore the historical, social and current context of the multiracial population.  In addition, allow for communication about the recognition of multiracial issues as opposed to ethnocentric values.  Participants will have the opportunity to explore how to be allies for multiracial students and communities.  Participants will leave this session with a better understanding that racial identity is a social construct is changing and will affect our campuses in a positive manner.

Session 5 Closing | 4-4:30 p.m. | All Students

  • “College Student Showcase”, USHE Institutions, various members of the National Pan-Hellenic Council sororities and fraternities
    Join us for an entertaining closing with the traditional college student showcase. Expect the Great has challenged all colleges and universities to show us their school pride and spirit. Witness a unity step choreographed by Michelle Love-Day and Whitney Harris that have empowered our Black college students through movement. Followed by the roll call competition where the most prideful institution will be crowned the winners of this year’s competition.
