Why earn a two-year degree while working towards your four-year degree?

Added Value To Your Degree

In the Weber State University chemical laboratory technician program, you’ll learn to:

  • Operate laboratory equipment
  • Conduct sophisticated experiments
  • Set up apparatuses for chemical reactions
  • Handle materials
  • Prepare compounds
  • Collect samples
  • Conduct analyses that evaluate product quality and consistency

You’ll be prepared to work in research and development laboratories and/or analytical laboratories. Both types of laboratories contain complex and sophisticated instrumentations that you’ll know how to use and maintain.

Requirements are simply met by adding Chem 2990 to the chemistry minor courses.

Gain Job Opportunities

Since a significant portion of the chemical industry workforce will be retiring in the next decade, there is a large and growing demand for chemical laboratory technicians. Pay scales are very competitive, often comparable with entry-level jobs requiring four-year degrees in other disciplines.

Chemical Tech Industries

Every day you encounter products and services that are supported by the chemical industry. This large, diverse industry provides support for many areas of manufacturing, including:

  • Petroleum processing
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Foods and beverages
  • Textiles
  • Plastics
  • Paints
  • Cosmetics.

Learn More About The Industry

Chemical laboratory technicians play a key role in helping to provide products and services through chemical technology. As a chemical laboratory technician, you might:

  • Team with scientists in the laboratory to study and develop new chemical processes and materials to meet society’s changing needs.
  • Contribute to design of experiments.
  • Measure properties of materials used and produced in chemical reactions
  • Record and report experimental results
  • Write technical reports
  • Assure that processes are carried out safely, cost-effectively, and according to the highest professional standards.

Next step into a Bachelor of Science degree...

The Chemical Laboratory Technician Degree (AAS) is also the preferred path to obtaining a bachelors degree in Chemistry and Biochemistry. An American Chemical Society certified degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry prepares you for careers in industry, medicine, teaching, or governmental agencies. It also provides an excellent foundation for graduate school in chemistry or, chemical engineering, or for other additional professional endeavors.
