Sticks and Stones Project

Collaborators

Mark Biddle, Weber State University
Audra Buck-Coleman, University of Maryland
Ann McDonald, Northeastern University in Boston

The university’s Sticks and Stones Project team received the 2010 Exemplary Collaboration Award, in recognition of the teamwork demonstrated by graphic design students and faculty from WSU, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Northeastern University and San Francisco State University.

The project focuses on helping design students understand the basis of stereotypes and how they influence prejudice. The project, which began in 2005, included students from the four schools attending a three-day seminar in Los Angeles in 2006. This summer, the Sticks and Stones Project will meet with graphic designers from around the globe in Berlin to discuss issues such as immigration, stereotyping and racism.
