“Creative Class” Author Richard Florida to Speak in Ogden

OGDEN, Utah – Richard Florida, economist and acclaimed author of “Who’s Your City?,” will make his first public appearance in Utah on Nov.11 at 7 p.m. in Peery’s Egyptian Theater (2415 Washington Blvd.) in Ogden.

A book signing will be held at 8 p.m., immediately following Florida’s lecture. Both events are free to the public.

Florida will deliver the 2008 Vernon M. and MaRee Buehler Leadership Lecture, an annual event presented by Weber State University’s John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics.

Florida is the founder of the Creative Class Group, a global advisory services firm that develops new ideas and strategies for business, government and community competitiveness. Florida is internationally recognized for his provocative insights into how creativity is revolutionizing the global economy.

Considered one of the world’s leading public intellectuals on economic competitiveness, demographic trends, and cultural and technological innovation, Florida’s ideas have been featured in major ad campaigns by BMW and Apple.

Since 2007, Florida has served as the director of the Martin Prosperity Institute and Professor of Business and Creativity at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. He previously has served as a professor of public policy at George Mason University and Carnegie Mellon University.

A regular columnist with The Globe and Mail newspapers, Florida has written articles for Atlantic Monthly, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe and Financial Times. In addition to the newly released “Who’s Your City?,” Florida also is the author of the international best-seller “The Rise of the Creative Class” and “The Flight of the Creative Class.”

Florida’s lecture is funded through a $1 million endowment, presented to WSU in 2006, that established the Vernon M. and MaRee Buehler Leadership Chair in the John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics.

Laura D’Andrea Tyson, a former national economic adviser to the White House, delivered the inaugural Buehler Leadership Lecture in March 2007.

The event is co-sponsored by WSU’s Ralph Nye Lecture Series.
