WSU Promotes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State University’s Women’s Center will host a variety of events to raise awareness and support for women who are in treatment or in recovery from breast cancer.

“Breast cancer is the second leading cancer for women in the United States,” said Stephanie McClure, the new Women’s Center director. “Post mastectomy care can be quite expensive, and often insurance does not cover the full costs associated with purchasing breast prosthesis or post-mastectomy bras."

Members of the campus community, who want to help, can make donations at the “Bras for a Cause” table in the Shepherd Union Atrium every Wednesday and Thursday in October from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. or go online at weber.edu/womenscenter.

The Women’s Center also is providing support to the American Cancer Society’s “Road to Recovery.” Volunteers are needed, particularly in Davis and Weber Counties, to drive patients with cancer to and from medical treatments. More information is available at “Bras for a Cause” table or by visiting cancer.org/driveamile.

Workshops for Breast Cancer Awareness Month will include “Crafternoon,” Oct. 20 from 2-4 p.m. in Shepherd Union Room 322. Participants will learn enough to crochet a chemo cap or soft prosthetic for a cancer survivor. Beginner patterns will be provided, but participants can also bring their own supplies. Knitters also are welcome.

A second workshop, Oct. 29 from11 a.m.-noon, Shepherd Union Room 322, will discuss safe cosmetics and the link between cancers and chemicals.

Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month sends a message of caring to those affected by the disease.

“We actually reached out to survivors around campus and asked them what would make a difference, so they knew they had support,” McClure said. “We wanted to be very intentional about keeping our support local.”
