Sondheim’s Music Featured in UMT Production

Utah Musical Theatre will explore the musical works of one of the most prominent lyricists of the past 50 years with its production of “Side By Side By Sondheim,” which opens June 24 at Peery’s Egyptian Theater (2415 Washington Blvd.) in Ogden.

For more than 50 years, Stephen Sondheim has written lyrics and composed music for Broadway shows, made-for-TV musicals and movie soundtracks. “Side By Side By Sondheim” features Sondheim’s works prior to 1977, when the revue debuted on Broadway. The Tony Award-winning musical contains 28 of his songs from shows like “Company,” “Follies,” “A Little Night Music” and “West Side Story.” Bruce Cohen, UMT artistic and managing director, said that the production is a “simple, cabaret evening of music that is complex and difficult to master.”

Traditionally, the show includes parts for two women and one man, but Cohen decided to expand the roles to include five women and three men. “We wanted to give the music a fuller sound for a large venue like the Egyptian Theater,” Cohen said. “And really, Sondheim tunes deserve that kind of power.”

The show opens at 7:30 p.m. June 24 and continues on June 25, 29, and July 1, 5, 7 and 9 at Peery’s Egyptian Theater. “Side By Side By Sondheim” will be performed in repertory with UMT’s production of “Kiss Me, Kate.” Individual tickets are $20 adults, $16 senior citizens and $10 WSU students. Tickets are available by calling (801) 626-8500 or (800) WSU-TIKS, or at the door one hour prior to the performance. For more information visit
