WSU Alumnus Wins Entrepreneur of the Year Award

OGDEN, Utah – Alan Martin, founder and CEO of Campus Book Rentals and Weber State University alumnus, is the 2012 Ernst & Young Utah Region Entrepreneur of the Year award winner in the Retail and Consumer Products category.

The honor was announced June 7 in Salt Lake City.

This is the latest in a series of awards and honors for Martin, who graduated from WSU in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in technical sales. Last fall Martin received the WSU Salutes Young Alumnus award from the WSU Alumni Association. He graced the February 2012 cover of “Utah Business” magazine as one of its “Forty Under 40” honorees, a program that recognizes rising stars in the Utah business community.

Martin used the technical sales training he received at WSU to launch a low-priced textbook rental operation out of an Ogden warehouse in 2007. (CBR) has since mushroomed into a multi-million-dollar enterprise providing services to students on nearly 6,000 U.S. college campuses. Philanthropically spirited, Martin donates a portion of his company’s proceeds to Operation Smile, a humanitarian organization that performs life altering cleft lip surgeries on children.

Martin advances to the Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year program. National winners will be announced at an awards gala in Palm Springs, Calif., in November.
