Swenson Building Set to Close for Major Renovation

OGDEN, Utah – Swenson Gymnasium on Weber State University's Ogden campus will close for renovation on May 16.

Construction crews began preliminary work on the structure this spring. After the end of spring semester in early May, the building will close for a little more than a year so crews can address several safety issues in the building, such as installing a fire suppression system and retrofitting the walls to meet updated seismic code. The renovation will also replace outdated electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation systems.

The university received funding for the improvements from the state during the 2004 legislative session. WSU received additional funding from a private donation to create state of the art classrooms that better utilize existing space in the structure.

The facility first opened in 1962 and was the original arena for the men's basketball team. Today the facility is primarily used as an academic building and houses the Department of Health Promotion and Human Performance. During the renovation, classes and faculty offices located in the building will be relocated to a former residence hall. The C. William Stromberg Health and Physical Ed. Center will remain open while Swenson is offline.

The renovation is expected to be complete by summer 2006 and the building will reopen for classes beginning fall 2006.
