WSU Interior Design Students Create and Auction Chairs for Charity

OGDEN, Utah — Weber State University interior design students will auction vintage chairs April 24 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Copper Nickel (2450 Grant Ave., Ogden) during the fourth annual Charitable Chair event. Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis and the WSU Interior Design Scholarship fund.

“Charitable Chair is a wonderful event,” said Kristen Arnold, WSU interior design program coordinator. “We have always had great success. We would like to have the community come out and support the Boys & Girls Clubs as well as the design program. It is a really fun, fast-paced evening.”

In an effort to combine curriculum with community outreach, interior design majors must find a chair with significant historical style. The students select finishes and materials to restore or create pieces that are structurally sound, well-crafted and an accurate representation of the time period’s style. As part of the process, students solicit community sponsorships of services, products and funds to aid in the restoration.

“Students can go to antique stores, go online or even look in their grandma’s attic for chairs,” Arnold said. “People donate chairs each year as well.”

Tickets for the evening are $15 and can be purchased at weberstatetickets.com until the night of the event. The chairs will be sold at auction to the highest bidder. At 6 p.m., a silent auction will take place. At 7 p.m., the live auction will commence. Chairs can be viewed in a photo gallery online at weber.edu/interiordesign/charitable_chair.html.

“We will have seven chairs available during the silent auction,” Arnold said. “We have a total of 26 chairs this year. Some are sets, and some are individual chairs. The only thing people won’t know until the day of the event is which chairs will be in the silent auction and which will be live.”

Those who are unable to attend the event but would like to submit bids can contact Arnold at kristenarnold@weber.edu.
