WSU Offers Cash for Student Startup Competition

OGDEN, Utah — Weber State University students have the chance to receive a cash award to jump-start their recreation-themed business, during the Hall Global Entrepreneurship Center’s 2015 Startup Weber competition. The all-day competition on April 18 will last from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in Shepherd Union Room 404.

A cash prize of $10,000 will be awarded to help the winning team launch its business venture. Local businesses will provide additional prizes to the winners, including free consulting and support such as accounting and legal services.

“Startup Weber provides students with the opportunity to collaborate in a team setting, as well as receive constructive feedback from prominent local entrepreneurs and executives,” said Dave Noack, entrepreneurship center director.

During the day, successful executives and founders in the recreation industry will mentor participants and suggest ideas to develop and pitch their ideas. The competition will benefit both community and students.

“Business leaders have the opportunity to get involved with our school, and it provides our diverse student body with hands-on help,” said Amy Hirschi, entrepreneurship center assistant.

Students will check in by 9 a.m. and begin pitching recreation-themed startup ideas shortly thereafter. Following the conclusion of pitches, students will form teams around the most promising ideas and work throughout the day on their business model and final pitch. They will finish with a pitch to a panel of judges that will select the winning team.

Students with or without an idea are invited to attend and participate. All WSU students enrolled in at least six semester credit hours are encouraged to register for the contest.

The Hall Global Entrepreneurship Center is housed in the John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics. It offers a minor to students from any major who want to pursue their professional passion and supplement their education with entrepreneurship courses.
