Valuing Humanity at Weber State University

Dear Students and Colleagues,

Over the last several days, students, staff and faculty have found stickers and posters on the Weber State University Ogden campus promoting an organization identified by the Anti-Defamation League as a white supremacist group.

At Weber State, we vigorously protect free speech and the diversity of ideas. Nonetheless, we call out racist and hateful speech aimed at intimidating and frightening individuals and communities. The rhetoric and the tactics used by this group do not align with Weber State University’s core values of access, opportunity and respect.

Inappropriately posting fliers and stickers in this way amounts to criminal mischief, so Facilities Management and Student Affairs staff have worked with campus police to remove these materials. Teams will continue monitoring our campuses to eliminate all inappropriately posted items and, most importantly, maintain the welcoming and safe environment our entire diverse community deserves.

If you notice materials or activities of concern, please call the WSU dispatch center at 801-626-6460.

As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stated, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” As a Weber State family, let us strive to set a national example by engaging in respectful conversations and endeavors that value humanity, promote understanding and create a better future for all.

Most sincerely,

Brad Mortensen, President
