Crushing the Curve: A Digital Theatre Experience


Crushing the Curve is a six-part online series exploring the art of theatre and how performers, practitioners and audience members engage with live performance. 

Each event is fully produced by the Weber State University Theatre Area in the Department of Performing Arts. In this series, viewers will embark on a digital journey that encompasses all areas of cyber and experimental performance, from the writing room to behind the scenes to the virtual stage. All events are free and open to the public.

Crushing the Curve: Illumination

: November 19 (for audiences 13 and up) and November 20 (for audiences 18 and up)

Illumination features the premiere reading of new works created specifically for digital theatre by students at Weber State University.

The performance on Thursday, November 19 is recommended for ages 13 and up and features the following plays:

CATS OF ZOOM, written by Alison Albrecht
EGGS BENEDICT, written by Gabe Priest
MURDER IN THE ZOOM ROOM, written by Sam Rust
and INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN, written by Jake Stubbs

 

The performance on Friday, November 20 is intended for audiences for ages 18 and up due to strong language and features the following plays:

CATS OF ZOOM, written by Alison Albrecht
EGGS BENEDICT, written by Gabe Priest
MURDER IN THE ZOOM ROOM, written by Sam Rust
INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN, written by Jake Stubbs
and MUTANT SPACE TIGERS, written by Pedro Flores

Crushing the Curve: A New World

A New World is a musical showcase exploring life and the world we live in through the art of song. Experience all the highs and lows, joys and sorrows, and messy in-betweens life has to offer from the comfort of your own screen. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Crushing the Curve: Working

Working is a panel discussion with performance professionals in a range of unusual theatrical careers. Learn about working in the live events sector and the current state of the industry from the perspectives of professionals from Broadway to beyond. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Panelists:

Cherie B Tay is a New York City based stage manager by way of Texas, Connecticut, Singapore, Pennsylvania, and San Diego. She has many interests including photography, music / ukulele, voice overs, good food, website building, and puzzle cubes. She totally shaved her head during the Broadway Shutdown. She has worked on numerous productions on Broadway and Off-Broadway, including HadestownAmelie, A New Musical and the national tour of In the Heights.

Brendon Boyd founded BoydDesign Inc in 2009 after a number of years freelancing in NYC. Coming from a theatrical background, his first show was in high school with a 2 scene preset lighting board- a show which he had to miss due to his appendix nearly bursting! But that miss turned into a passion of lighting shows. Fast forward 22 years Brendon is still doing productions ranging from corporate events to large format theatrical exhibitions to 8000 person concerts in the park. When not working, Brendon enjoys camping in our beautiful national parks as well as finding some ‘twisties’ on his motorcycle.

Michael Kramer a is production designer with experience in TV, Theatre, and live events. His current projects are for ESPN Deportes Mexico City and the NFL Network Podcast Studio. Recent projects include NFL Network Total Access and ESPN NFL Insiders. Kramer is a proud native of New Orleans, LA where he graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1997. He later went on to graduate school at Western Illinois University, receiving an MFA in Scenic Design 2001.

Crushing the Curve: Behind the Curtain

Behind the Curtain takes audiences behind-the scenes for Weber State University’s musical production, Pippin. Catch a glimpse of song and dance, hear from and see the work of designers, and meet the cast and crew who put in the work to make the magic happen. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Fever is a student-driven showcase of scenes and songs, fully produced by the Associated Arts of the Theatre at Weber State University, a student-run organization of theatre performers and practitioners. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Crushing the Curve: Alice

Alice is a dark comedy radio play written by Matthew Ivan Bennett, based on the classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. This production is reimagined for the digital medium and audience members will see most of the original tale’s iconic characters, but with a twist of gruesomeness. Expect to be both delighted and aghast in a play perfect for the fall season. Recommended for ages 13 and up.
