Reflections at Rancho Encantado

Through the clear air of settling dusk
Those of us with finished dinners wondered aloud
What those graceful lights in the valley below signified
What people they belonged to.
The answer"Los Alamos"hung
In the growing darkness like a dancer's leap, off balance
Caught in mid-air on film
Only to crumble to the floor, broken and alone.
The beauty and the horror and the history
Became one in the unification of the night.
