What is Wellness Coaching?
Wellness Coaching is a one-on- one conversation with a trained professional who can help you work through your barriers and set meaningful goals. Long-term change is not one-size- fits all and only you know what will work best for you. Wellness coaches don’t tell you what to do – they simply facilitate the conversation and help you find the answers on your own.
If you want to improve your wellness, but don’t know where to start or simply feel “stuck,” Wellness Coaching may be the solution you need.
Wellness Coaching is provided as a free service to all Weber State students. Sessions typically last 30 - 45 minutes in length. The number of sessions you attend is up to you. Up to six are available to each student, free of charge.
Is coaching the same thing as counseling?
No – though wellness coaches provide a trusting, caring ear, they are not trained in mental health treatment or diagnosis. Wellness Coaching should not be used in place of counseling. If you have a mental health concern or crisis, please contact Weber State’s Counseling and Psychological Services Center.
It’s also important to note that we are considered non-confidential. As such, we are required to report all disclosures of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, child abuse, elder abuse and abuse against people with disabilities. If you need a confidential resource to work through any of these issues, please contact Weber State’s Counseling and Psychological Services Center.
What can I expect when I sign up for Wellness Coaching?
You will be asked to complete an initial self-assessment and return it prior to your first session. This allows you to reflect on your overall health and wellness, your readiness to change and your priorities for coaching, so it’s important to complete this thoughtfully and thoroughly.
This assessment will be used to guide the initial coaching session, which is the longest session you’ll have with us. Together, we will review your assessment and discuss where you want Wellness Coaching to take you. Please plan on this session lasting for a full hour.
Subsequent sessions will be shorter and may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Together, we will discuss your goals, any progress or setbacks you’ve faced, and work together to set new goals that ultimately get you closer to where you want to be.
As you get better at this process, your sessions will get shorter and further apart. The second session typically occurs about 1 week after the first, then two weeks, then one month. At this point, most clients feel that they have a clear vision and plan for moving forward and don’t typically require a 5 th session. Of course, each person is different and your timeline will be based on your progress and individual needs.
Can you just give me a diet or exercise plan that I can follow?
The ultimate goal of Wellness Coaching is to teach you the skills to make lasting, meaningful change – in any part of your life. If we gave you a plan, you would inevitably get bored and give up. That’s why diets never truly work and exercise fads rarely last. We’ll teach you how to set goals, find credible sources of information and learn from your setbacks to make adjustments that work for you – skills that you can use to improve any aspect of your life. We don’t want to give you a fish and feed you for a day – we want to teach you to fish and feed you for life.
